Camp McDowell
Summer Camp Application for the Camp and Conference Center for the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama Camp McDowell ...The Heart of the Diocese!
ABOUT SUMMER CAMP Since 1948, Camp McDowell has been a vital gathering spot for the Diocese of Alabama. It is on the banks of Clear Creek, nestled in beautiful woodlands adjacent to the Bankhead National Forest. Former campers will tell you that Camp McDowell is a supportive Christian community where young people learn to be themselves, and where they develop an abiding respect for the integrity and individuality of all living things. Camp is fun, too! A unique feature of each summer session is the program theme. Camp Directors and their staffs design daily age-appropriate programs and activities incorporating skits, songs, art, and a healthy dose of humor. These programs encourage learning based on scripture and the traditional teachings of the Church, and how they relate to contemporary and personal issues. Intended to make the camp experience more than fun in the summer sun, the themes range from the environment and relationships to decision-making and dicipleship. One thing is always certain: campers come away with a deeper understanding of themselves and God in the world around them. In addition to nurturing spiritual, social, and creative growth, Camp McDowell offers hiking, canoeing, soccer, basketball, arts & crafts, playground, a ropes and group action course, and an olympic-size swimming pool. OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATION REQUIREMENTS Dear Parent/Guardians, Thank you for applying to attend Camp McDowell! This portion of our application will orient you to our medication guidelines. Camp McDowell’s nurse is not allowed to offer over-the-counter (OTC) medications to campers due to requirements from the Alabama State Board of Nursing and the Alabama State Pharmacy Board. This is similar to many Alabama school policies. Did you know many times campers need OTC medications for unanticipated reasons like a bee sting, bump, or bruise? Did you know if your camper does not have OTC meds sent with him/her, a time-consuming process must be followed in order to get it to them? That is no fun for your camper or for us! We recommend that you send OTC medications with your camper just in case he/she needs it in a timely manner. We suggest something for pain/fever relief (i.e. Ibuprophen), allergy relief (i.s. Benadryl), and upset stomach relief (i.e. Tums). Like prescription medications, if you want your camper to have access to OTC medications while at camp, you must provide these medications yourself (send them to camp with your camper in the original manufacturer’s container). provide your written authorization to allow the Camp Nurse to distribute it. Please use the space provided on your camper’s HEALTH FORM to list OTC and prescription medications and sign the “OTC Parent Authorization”. Thank you! All OTC medicines will be given following manufacturer’s recommendations. Parents must provide a physician’s written authorization if the camper is younger than 12 and the OTC medicine sent is not recommended for children younger than 12. Parents must provide a Health Care Provider’s or physician’s written authorization for a camper to keep and selfadminister nasal sprays or inhalers. If you have any questions regarding this policy please contact me at (205)387-1806 or
[email protected]. Parents may also want to contact their child’s primary physician, or health care provider, and ask the physician to inform the Camp Nurse of any health or medical restrictions for your child. Respectfully, Nancy Evans, R.N., Camp McDowell
Camp McDowell’s Concussion Policy
A concussion is a brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or by a blow to another part of the body with the force transmitted to the head. All concussions are potentially serious. If a camper sustains an injury that might cause a concussion, his/her parents or guardian will be contacted ASAP. If the camper exhibits signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion, he/she will be referred to a medical doctor immediately. Once examined and cleared by a doctor, the camper may return to camp activities. All Summer Camp staff attend an in service training regarding concussions. 4

Thank you for your cooperation. Camp is a place to do things that your child cannot do at home. To that end, we like for campers to get “unplugged” at camp. We discourage the use of electronic game devices. Portable DVD players, I-Pads, and cell phones are not allowed. Electronics detract from the “camp” experience and run the risk of being damaged or lost. CONTACTING CAMPERS AT CAMP Campers may receive emails at

Please, only one package per camper, per session. Birthdays excepted! CABIN ASSIGNMENTS
