CANFIELD BEATTIE 1900–1987 Dr. C anfield Beattie died on A ugust 18, 1987 in Portland, O regon at the age o f 86. H e was a long-tim e m em ber o f both the A m erican A lpine Club and the A lpine C lub o f C anada, having joined the A AC in 1935 and the A CC in 1931. He w as born in O m aha, N ebraska on D ecem ber 30, 1900. His fam ily m oved to Portland in 1912 and Canfield w ent on to attend Stanford U niversity and Stanford M edical School. In the early 1920s he took a graduate degree in ophthalm ology at the U niversity o f V ienna. W hile in A ustria, he becam e interested in the m ountains and on his return to the Pacific N orthw est he continued this involvem ent, w hich was to go on for the rest o f his life. Canfield attended a num ber o f the A lpine C lub o f C anada’s sum m er cam ps during the 1930s and he received the Silver Rope badge, given to outstanding clim b leaders. He was full o f interesting accounts o f odd happenings on clim bs, including such stories as having to bring dow n a clim ber from M ount A ssiniboine w ith a cervical vertebra cracked in a fall, to arrange an upper body cast and then to shepherd the victim on horseback fifteen m iles to the road. This was all long before the days o f helicopters. He continued his active m edical practice until shortly before his death and, w hile he had not clim bed for som e tw enty years, he still made regular trips to his best beloved m ountains, the C anadian R ockies.
