FAITH AND FILM – Friday, September 15, 2017, 7:00 p.m. This month’s Faith and Film offering is the Academy Award’s Best Picture, Moonlight, a chronicle of the childhood, adolescence and burgeoning adulthood of a young, African-American, gay man growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami. How do we build personal identity and who contributes to this maturing? The showing of Moonlight will be offered Friday, September 15, 2017 in Room 151, beginning at 7:00 p.m. A light supper will be served.

First United Methodist Memorial Foundation of Glendale Why the John Wesley Society and the Foundation of First UMC Glendale? This seemed like a daunting question and hard to answer when I was first asked to write this. I then began thinking about the mission of the church. To me that really is found in Matthew 28:19 “Make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” This is another seemingly unachievable task the church has been given. Most times in life when I am faced with what appears as an impossible task I tend to think of the quote attributed to Lao Tzu, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” Like all tasks, the only way to accomplish it is to first begin and then continue making incremental progress. The other thing that makes the impossible achievable is help, and the more help the more achievable the task becomes. This is what the Foundation does; it helps in the church’s task, and continues to do so into the future. Each gift that the foundation receives not only helps in spreading the gospel and making disciples today & tomorrow, but also for generations to come. The number of disciples that have given to the Foundation over the years is still making the task of the First UMC of Glendale easier to this very day. While our gifts to the Lord are always used in the church’s mission, there is something special about legacy gifts. So much of what has nurtured me and then my wife and now my children are thanks to work and gifts of those that came before. I am too young to have helped with the building of the Sanctuary or the Carlson Fellowship Center, but I found love, comfort and instruction within those walls and I was taught and comforted by those disciples of an earlier generation. The Foundation is my chance to not only help the current generation of disciples but the next and then the next and the one after that. This continued giving will ensure there is always a strong vibrant, loving community of believers here at First UMC of Glendale. Sam J. Weissen Chairman of the Foundation

Youth Happenings: The youth program started up for the year on August 27th with a pool party kick off. The kids swam, splashed, dove, and had a generally great time. On Friday, September 1st, we held our very first First Friday Fellowship event. There, the youth participated in hide and seek on a dark second floor, lots of ping pong, and round of the marshmallow face-stuffing game, “Chubby Bunny.” They also spent some time getting to know one another and thinking about what they would like to do this year. Our first regular youth meeting will be Sunday, September 10, where the youth will have the opportunity for more fellowship as well as intentional explorations of faith and study.
