SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL SURVEY
SUMMARY FOR THE BOROUGH OF GLEN ROCK, NEW JERSEY
REPORT SURVEY BACKGROUND •
All surveys were taken online.
•
Total Number of Submitted Surveys: 60
•
Submitted to Voorhees Transportation Center: July 2012
•
Analyzed and Returned: July 2012
PURPOSE OF SURVEY The goal of this survey is to learn how students travel to and from school and to understand better any issues or concerns parents have with allowing their child to walk or bike to school. The information gathered from this survey will be shared with the New Jersey Department of Transportation and will be used to support local, state and national Safe Routes to School programs. Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a nationwide effort to encourage more and safer walking and bicycling to school. All survey responses have been kept confidential and neither the parent respondent nor their child’s name have been associated with the results. These surveys were submitted to the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center for analysis in July 2012. For more information about these surveys or this Report, please contact Leigh Ann Von Hagen. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Certain questions allow the respondents to mark more than one response (ex: Q 8). When this is the case, both the number of survey respondents and the number of total responses are reported. The percentages reflect the total number of responses received. •
The response rate was highest from parents of third grade students. (Q 2)
•
There was a nearly even percentage of surveys returned by parents of male and female students. (Q 3)
•
All respondents indicated that the school district did not provide busing for their child, yet some respondents later indicated that their child used school buses as a mode of transportation.
•
The most frequently reported travel method for both arriving to and departing from school was in a family vehicle five days per week. (Q 7)
•
Most children who walk do so with a parent or guardian. (Q 8)
•
Forty‐eight percent of respondents reported living a mile or less from the school. (Q 9A)
•
When driving their child to school, the highest percentage (50%) of respondents indicated that the trip takes less than 5 minutes. (Q 9B)
•
Forty‐nine percent of respondents indicated that their child usually gets to and from school in a car. (Q 10A)
•
The number of responses for Q 10B was particularly low and may not appropriately reflect the entire student body. For example, though 40% of respondents reported that their child spends less than 5 minutes biking to school, the actual number of responses indicating so was only two.
•
Sixty‐eight percent of respondents reported that their child’s school encourages walking to and from school while only thirty‐one percent of respondents indicated that their child’s school encourages biking to and from school. (Q 11, 12)
•
Walk to school days was the most commonly reported way that respondents reported their child’s school encouraged walking while the presence of bike racks was the most common encouragement from school to bike to and from school. (Q 13 A, B)
•
Unsafe intersections was labeled as the most important factor in the respondent’s decision whether or not to let their child walk or bike to school. (Q 15A, 16A)
•
Child’s age received the highest percentage of responses for what affects the decision most regarding whether the respondents’ child walks or bikes to school. (Q 15B, 16B)
