Case Western Reserve University Project Summary

PROGRAM: The proposed project is an upperclassman 290 bed residence facility located on the property belonging th to Case Western Reservation University (CWRU). It is situated along E. 115 Street, just south of Wad Park Avenue. Construction is intended to begin late Spring 2014 with occupancy by August of 2015.

SITE: The site is found at the northern edge of CWRU. The topography of the property has approximately 5 feet of elevation change across it, with the high side at the southern edge of the site. The building is an ‘S’ shape which th creates two separate outdoor space at ground level; the plaza and the courtyard. The plaza is adjacent to 115 Street and the university property on the southern edge. The main entrance is located in the plaza. The courtyard is located in the northern portion of the site. The courtyard is accessible from the western edge of the site. Total site area = approximately 82,000 SF

BUILDING: The proposed 122,643 SF building houses 290 students and includes amenity spaces that are accessible to students and staff of CWRU. Of the 290 beds 16 of those are double occupancy townhouses located th along 115 street. The remaining 274 beds are apartment style consisting of double occupancy, triple occupancy and quadruple occupancy units. The amenity spaces consist of a multipurpose room, lounge, and active learning th room. Building services are accessible from 115 street and the utilities are accessible from the western side of the site. The predominate exterior material is brick masonry with portions of the exterior enclosure consisting of precast concrete panels, glass curtain wall and metal panels. The building is being designed to meet LEED Silver Certification requirements.

Sustainable Design Description This residence hall contributes to the sustainable education of those who inhabit it, acting not as a static building, but an interactive teaching tool. Spaces are organized and designed to promote experiential learning. This LEED Silver building facilitates the conversation on how art and science converge into sustainability by creating flexible spaces which promote not only university’s ethos and commitment to its pedagogical principles, but also community and shared collegiate experience. Residents can monitor and understand their environmental impact and provide knowledge to reduce their consumption of resources at Case Western and beyond

The building uses passive design to achieve energy and water savings. Health and comfort of residents is emphasized through the use of daylight, natural ventilation and connection to nature. Facades respond to solar orientation to maximize daylight while managing energy. High efficiency mechanical equipment, on-site water management, low flow plumbing fixtures and LED lighting allow ultimate performance while minimizing operating costs and maintenance.
