CASHIE RIVER THUNDERBOLT AND BALTIMORE, BERTIE COUNTY Acres: 749 acres Acquisition date: 10/28/04 This property is included in the Cashie River Swamp Natural Heritage area. The tract supports some of the largest and most diverse populations of migratory fishes on the Atlantic slope of the United States. The site was targeted for protection by the Nature Conservancy in the Lower Roanoke River landscape conservation project. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will manage the tract for public uses, including hunting, fishing, hiking and nature study. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
