STANDING to attention in front of esteemed war veterans, these cadets were put to the test. As members of the first Combined Cadet Force (CCF) in Northumberland, pupils from Northumberland Church of England Academy (NCEA) in Ashington, Northumberland, showed the decorated heroes how they wear the uniform with pride during their first inspection. Parading in front of Brigadier Greville Bibby, head of the army in the North East, and Newcastle-born Lt General Robin Brims, who led British operations in Iraq, the cadets were awarded the cap star of local regiment The Coldstream Guards. Proudly swapping their hats for berets with the Coldstream Guards Capstar, Lt General Brims said it was a great introduction to military life for the 40 young people and they should be very proud. “I think that an introduction to the military values and standards is an extremely helpful part of a young person’s wider development,” he said. “Obviously I was in the military and I think what it gives somebody, it shows them how to get on with people, how to present yourself and how to tell what you can and can’t do and I think that’s a really valuable asset in the work place. “I think it is huge in addition to the academic,” he added. well as the Duke of Northumberland as Brigadier Greville Bibby presented them with their Capstar and beret as well as carrying out their first inspection. He said: “Have you ever seen such a smart bunch of soldiers in your life, it is absolutely fantastic. “Wear your beret with pride and every time you put it on, remember the 360 year history that goes before you and the brave men who have gone before you who have worn the beret before you. It is about being part of a team, life is all about being part of a team.” Half of the 2,500 pupils at NCEA are eligible for free school meals - more than twice the national average. It is the first school in the county, and one of just dozens of state schools nationally, to offer a CCF programme to students. Cadets Robyn Thompson, 16, and Katie Moffat, 13, said they had both

joined the CCF to gain new skills and be given more opportunities. Robyn, from Ashington, said: “I want to try and up my training because I want to join the Army, I really enjoy the military side of things and it has been great fun.” Katie, also of Ashington, said her highlight had been their Easter camp in Otterburn. NECA executive director Andrew Day said he was very proud of his pupils as they received their cap star and beret. “My background in education is largely independent sector and most of those schools have a CCF so this was set up to encourage young people to look at the forces as a career and to introduce teaching them leadership, team work, and how to be resilient,” he said. “It enables them to be aspirational, to have ambition. We wanted to ensure we gave them as many opportunities as possible.”

Lord Sebastian Coe and North East runner Brendan Foster have supported the launch of a new foundation which has teamed up with the people behind the Great North Run to encourage youngsters to get fit. The stars have challenged children across the UK to get active and join in Britain’s biggest children’s running campaign. Lord Coe was joined by 500 children, founder and INEOS boss Jim Ratcliffe and a host of celebrity supporters – including Brendan Foster and Sharron Davies – to celebrate the launch of the GO Run For Fun Foundation, a charity aimed at encouraging Britain’s 5-10 year olds to take up running. GO Run For Fun has teamed up with Nova International to deliver a series of large and small running events to encourage grass roots participation and inspire the next generation of sporting talent. Lord Coe said: “GO Run For Fun aims to help children get more exercise and have fun at the same time” For more information and to enter your child for INEOS GO Run For Fun events happening in the region, or to register your local club or school’s interest in joining the campaign, visit: www.gorunforfun.com
