County receives assistance for clean-up efforts “Project WATER” Employment Opportunities The West Kentucky Workforce Investment Board (WKWIB) has been awarded funding up to $2.7 million by the Kentucky Education & Workforce Development Cabinet, Department of Workforce Investment, to assist with needed disaster assistance related to the recent flood and storm damage throughout the region. Earlier this week, Congressman Ed Whitfield announced the release of over $4.2 million in emergency federal funding to the Commonwealth to assist in expediting clean-up efforts throughout the state. Over half of the awarded funding will be available to 16 counties in the Purchase/Pennyrile region for the expressed purpose of providing a limited number of temporary employment opportunities for eligible individuals to assist local government and non-profit agencies in continued cleanup efforts. West Kentucky RECC seeks feedback (Mayfield, Ky.) June 14, 2011 – West Kentucky Rural Electric has released its 2011 Member Survey and encourages all members to provide feedback on how the cooperative is meeting members’ needs and how to better communicate cooperative news in the future. Member surveys can be found in members’ electric bills beginning June 14, 2011 and can be completed either via that form or on the cooperative’s website at www.wkrecc.com. [email protected] ARLINGTON –The monthly Arlington City Meeting was held on June 13. Those attending were Mayor Bobby McGee, Council members Jada Burgess, Bill Lambert, Paul Gaddie Clerk Anita Lambert, Visitors Angie Dowdy, Emily Denton Michael Toon with the Carlisle County Weekly, and Lilly Morefield with the Carlisle County News. A motion was made and carried to approve the minutes of the previous meeting was carried. Anita reported that the sanitation bill is much greater than what the city took in. Burgess said, she talked to someone at the Bardwell City and that she was told the bill could possibly be made in payments during the summer months when there is no rain water making the bill higher. After more discussion and a suggestion a motion was made and carried to set up payments for the sewer bill. Fire Chief Randy Carnor was not at the meeting but McGee stated that the Arlington Fire Department responded to a grass fire last week. During Ball Park report McGee stated that the city has
only collected $100, from the ball teams that are signed to play at the park. He stated that the teams pay $350 each and there are 5 teams which would come to $1,700 . He stated that if teams have not paid the fee by the 6-23 they will not be allowed to play at the park. Commissioners were all in agreement with the rule. Burgess stated that a new water heater was purchased for the concession stand at the park. Daily Operations McGee stated that John has been mowing, trimming limbs and cleaning out ditches. During old business McGee stated he would like to thank Jada Burgess, Anita Lambert, and John Lemons for all the help they offered during the Memorial Day Festival. He also stated that it was a very successful event. The 1st reading of the 20112012 Budget was discussed. Anita stated that commissioners can look over the budget and make any changes. McGee stated he would like to have time to look the budget over and have a special called meeting to have the 1st reading of the budget. Insurance agents Angie Dowdy, and Emily Denton gave an presentations for AFlac Insurance to city employees and commissioners. The meeting went into closed session to discuss property.

The Authority announced more than $300,000 in new investments to provide cutting-edge technology, first-rate care, and updated health services in the Delta region. Today’s announcement marks the Delta Regional Authority’s continued commitment to addressing health disparities in the Delta region. The completed projects will create jobs in Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois while improving health infrastructure and technology for thousands of residents. Providing First-Rate Care and Updated Health Services Bardwell, Kentucky – $150,000 for the renovation of a community health clinic in rural Carlisle County Barlow, Kentucky – $24,000 for critical medical equipment at Ballard County Medical Clinic Cairo, Illinois – $150,000 for the expansion of a small health technology business

Our research shows that a 1% increase in life expectancy leads to a 4.6% increase in job growth. Healthier communities yield healthier local economies.” The new announcement comes on the heels of the Delta Regional Authority’s announcement of Taskforce “Razorback,” a health initiative led by military reservists to bring free medical care to 5,000 families in the Arkansas Delta this month. The Delta Regional Authority has been a leader in supporting efforts to address health disparities suffered by the region. The Health Advisory Committee
of the Delta Regional Authority met this week to strategize “Growing a Healthy Workforce in the Delta” throughout the eight state, 252 counties and parishes served by the Delta Regional Authority. The Delta region, consistently suffers from poor health outcomes. Compared with national rates, deaths in the Delta region from circulatory diseases are 21.2% higher, deaths from cancer are 12.7% higher and deaths from accidents are 42% higher. According to the March of Dimes, infant mortality rates in the Delta region were almost 30% higher than the national average. The Delta Regional Authority is a federal-state partnership that serves 252 counties and parishes in parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee. Chris Masingill, appointed by President Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate to be the DRA’s Federal CoChairman, along with the governors of the eight states comprise the Authority’s board.
