Sitting

Legislative Liaison

by Judy Jasmyn I’ve taken a poll and find that people sit in their chairs in a variety of ways. Some people don’t touch the back of their chair, preferring to sit up straight, and some slouch over like a sideways C. Others, like me sit all the way back in my chair, preferring to use the back for support. Then of course, there are those

who sit down gently in their chair and slide until touching the back. As for me, I do things quickly and find that I’m the only one sitting all the way back with the back of my blouse rolled up. You see, when I sit down and back, I do it so quickly that each time I put a little more pressure on the back of my blouse, so that over time the back of my blouse looks like an accordion window shade…rolled up. I’ve tried to pull the back down to straighten it, only to find it rolled back up when I let go. I’ve asked others how they keep their blouse from rolling up… and that’s how I found I am the only one sliding into my chair…similar to a baseball player sliding into home base. It never occurred to me before that people do things differently. Now I know. So, that’s my story as to why the back of my blouse is rolled up.

Insure, Ensure and Assure by Bob Pacenta Do you know the difference between insure, ensure and assure? The main difference between insure and ensure is that you insure something to be prepared in case something bad happens, while you talk about taking steps to ensure that something will (or won't) happen. For example, you insure your house against water and fire damage, but you put snacks in your car to ensure that you will have snacks if you get stuck in traffic. “Assure” is usually used in reference to putting someone's mind at rest and guaranteeing that something will happen, as in “I assured Sally that the memo would be finished by 3:00.”
