Chapter 16: Multilingualism FURTHER READING Wei (2000b) discusses both individual and societal bilingualism in a selection of important papers on topics both theoretical and applied. The most wide-ranging, accessible, and authoritative introduction to the subject is Baker (2011), now in its 5th edition. A more in-depth treatment of many of the issues explored here, together with extensive discussion of cognitive dimensions of multilingualism and summaries of multilingualism in different world regions, is contained in Bhatia and Ritchie (2004). Grosjean (2008) is a key source to explore the ideas of this influential scholar, as is the engaging blog he writes for the magazine Psychology Today ➔ W16.4. An important academic journal which emphasizes language in use is the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development ➔ W16.5. Information on multilingual corpora can be found at David Lee’s website ➔ W16.6. In Language in Use: A Reader there are two selections of relevance to the topic of multilingualism (➔ R3.1, R3.2).
