HOW TO COMMAND EGO AND WILL

What is the Ego?—How to use your Willpower

aspects or characteristics, all bound together by an Ego, the “I” of your personality. However weak your will, however weak your characteristics, the Ego is still alive within you and, being alive, tries hard to exert itself. Ego in itself is not a personality. It is the dominant quality within you and strives always to rule you; but even the Ego has to be known and mastered. Learn what your special characteristics are, and you will find in them all a prevalent leaning towards a particular desire. The Ego is, after all, mainly, though

The Ego is selfish and always derives its satisfaction from within, striving not to be at all affected by the outer world.

Self-preservation is tempered by the leaning in most of us to help others in distress; this means that there is a definite leaning towards love already within us.

It may be b sudden nly called forth by an a impulse e

This is an illustration, but it serves well. We don't have to wait for an

can deliberately let it grow within us for all occasions. This is one way of mastering the Ego. The Ego is mainly concerned with self-preservation; with the preservation of any false front you may put up to conceal a fault, as well as with the preservation of the

physical

life.

In

order

to

preserve the physical life, the Ego makes use of its mental powers to deceive the body; for it is the Ego which joins together the mental and physical parts of

YOU.

The Ego is important, but is not all-important. The Ego is personality, but it is not the complete personality. The Ego joins in itself the whole of you, but it is still unable to function completely by and in itself. For if it could, you could exist but you could not live, you could go through all the motions of existence* but you could not pass judgment on the outer world, let alone on yourself. The Ego draws together your characteristics, which, together, make up your leanings, or inclinations, towards a

implements what the Ego desires. There

is

a

partnership

between Ego and Will which makes for harmony in the Mind. If there is no accord there is no harmony, and the character is weak. The Will is the medium of your Ego; Will-Power is the ability to FORCE your Ego to obedience to the commands of your Will, which, in the end, is YOU, perfectly coordinated.

To have your Will acting in harmony with your Ego through Will-Power is to exert the utmost magnetism of your Personality. However weak your personality, you still make use of your Will, even if only slightly. You say, ”I will do this”, and the strength of your Will depends upon the emphasis you put upon the positive “will”, not only physically, through speech, but right down to the core of your Mind, which is your Ego. Your Will is unbending in purpose; but your Ego constantly strives to

7

conquer it. Will-Power is the weapon which, consciously used, keeps the perfect balance www.inspirational-quotes-and-thoughts.com

between the two. For, just as the Ego is weak without the Will, the Will is a useless quantity without the consciousness of your Will-Power. We will simplify this still further. Your Ego is made up of all the things you ARE; your Will of all the things you WANT TO BE: your WillPower of all the things you WILL be.

If you become conscious of the things of which you are, you become conscious of the things you want to be; and therefore you CAN become what you will be. Your Ego is made up of faults but it is also made up of all your potentialities for good, which includes success, power and ability.

Ability is within all of us, to a

lesser or a greater degree; we have to learn how to make the greatest use of it. Let us analyze the Ego still further, for, again to a lesser or a greater degree, we are all made up the same way. Let us enumerate our propensities, and see how Will and Will-Power co-ordinate with them. 1.

We seek food, for we must eat. This forces our attention on our future career; or

8

we must earn enough to live. Are we to be content with a job, ANY job, which gives www.inspirational-quotes-and-thoughts.com

us enough u mone ey to buy our o food and a very little else? ? If we tak ke the trouble to an nalyze this propens sity, we can c see th hat our Will and our Will-Pow wer can make m us ris se above the level of taking a job merely for th he sake off eating. 2.

We are e disgusted d by the things t we don't like e. This brings into pla ay our sen nses of be eauty, of sight, s of smell, s and d so on. How wever we eak our Will, W we ca an accept nothing that t disgustts us; butt if we have the power to analyze the things that t repel us, we are one ste ep nearer to masterring ourselv ves. For sometimes s s it is ne ecessary to t overco ome disgustt in order to prove our Will stronger than our Ego. In life there are many y things which rep pel us, yet which are necess sary for th he furtherrance of success. s If we can overcome e disgust, our abilitty for strength beco omes more e powerful.

3.

We nee ed a mate e. As far as a our Ego o is concerned, any y mate will do, as a means to sexua al satisfacttion; but our Will is to seek k ate, with attraction ns that appeal to our good d the suiitable ma tastes; and our Will-Powe er forces us to con ntinue loo oking until the right mate is i found. Will-Powe er, exerted d through h the Will,, also makes m us rise abo ove the purely se exual des sires of the t Ego, which is s indiscriminate, in n order to gain its greatest g p pleasure in n the ultim mate fulfillment with h the true e mate.

4.

We run n away fro om the thiings that hurt us, physical p orr mental. In other words, w we e fear. Th he Ego co onsists of the t negative and th he positive e, in abou ut equal proportions s

make the negative harmless. When we fear, we are timid, we cannot account for our next actions because they depend entirely on what is about to startle us in the outer world; we are driven more and more into our selves, without being able to escape from the effects of the world; the barrier we begin to erect consists entirely of the negative fear. Our Ego is entirely in charge of our Mind, and is continually concentrating on itself. The Will, consciously used through Will-Power, is able to subdue this propensity; the Will cannot endure being the slave of circumstances; its driving power is to CONTROL circumstances rather than to be controlled by them; so it impels itself FORWARD into the outer world, boldly faces what attacks the Mind, which controls the Body, AND WILL NOT REST UNTIL IT HAS VANQUISHED ANYTHING THAT THREATENS TO CONQUER IT. It is too busy fighting to have time to concentrate on fear! 5.

To find things out for ourselves we have a strong curiosity. This is very strong indeed in the

Will

ALL

of us, but the Ego, which is not balanced by

through

Will-Power,

will

waste

time

by

investigating the wrong things, by getting hold of the wrong facts, by learning haphazardly. The Will forces the Mind to learn for a purpose, to better itself, to make worldly prospects a surer success. Will-Power forces the Mind to keep to its purpose. 6.

10

After we have mated, we have the initial desire to look after our children. Our Ego www.inspirational-quotes-and-thoughts.com

shifts responsibility by informing us that the mere fact of having brought them into the world is enough; our Will forces us to protect them, to show them affection, to educate them, to bring them up the best way we know, and our Will-Power forces us to keep their prospects continually in our Mind. As their prospects depend so closely on our own, it becomes essential for us to make a success of ourselves. We cannot teach what we ourselves cannot learn; we cannot give what we have not ourselves. This is all negative. We CAN teach what we have learnt; we CAN give what we have received through the perfect co-ordination of our Ego, Will

and Will-Power, teaching our children to do the same. 7.

We like to make friends. This social desire is in all of us, to a lesser or a greater degree. The Ego wants to show itself off and wants to find its own reflection in others; but it is also afraid of being “shown up”. Because it is not quite sure of itself, it will seek to subdue this feeling; but the Will forces it to go out and make friends, because the Ego cannot live entirely without companionship and the Will knows it. Will-Power makes friends and cements friendship by a mutual give and take of the best that is in both; for friendship is impossible where the Ego alone is in charge.

8.

We all want to lead. The Ego wants to domineer; and this need not necessarily be the same as leading, though the Ego mistakes it for the same thing. The Will, through Will-Power, is able to sift this feeling, www.inspirational-quotes-and-thoughts.com

11

which is an ingredient of ambition, so that it knows when to lead, i.e. take charge, and when gracefully to be led. 9.

We also like to be led. The Ego, ready to give in at the first sign of attack, will forget its innate desire to lead and readily become the captive of a stronger personality. The Will, unable to endure the weakness of constant subjection, revolts; with the use of Will-Power it tries to turn the tables; if it is wrongly used, this will only result in inner conflict, the Will being too weak to balance the Ego; if it is rightly used, the Personality will not be obstinately assertive so much as positive of itself.

10.

We get angry quickly. The Ego is always ready to take resentment because it is weak in itself; the Will refuses to be disseminated in the weakness of anger because it knows that anger is destructive to Will-Power, without which the Personality is nothing.

11.

We have a need for shelter and implements. This calls into play our need of a career which will give us the money for the things we want; our Ego says, Take the first things that come; our Will says, Look for the best; our Will-Power gives us the patience necessary to look for the best. All this calls for the application of ability.

12.

We need the help of others when we are in danger. The Ego finds

danger

everywhere,

therefore

it

always

seeks

for

dependence, having no reliance on itself; our Will seeks to

www.inspirational-quotes-and-thoughts.com

12

overcome danger by itself and, through Will-Power, restrains us to rely upon ourselves. 13.

We need to collect things. This can be due to ambition, greed, the need for power shown through physical emblems rather than through psychological magnetism, love or sociability.

Ego collects things,

people, friends, weapons, love affairs, money, for the sake of them as part of “showing off”; Will forces the need into the proper channels, Will-Power looks for the psychological value of things and people, for the best that can be brought out of them for the good of the Personality. What sets out as a selfish feeling becomes, through the Will, an unselfish one. 14.

We laugh at other people's failings. The Ego can only bolster itself by turning its attention to other people's failings in order to forget its own. The Will concentrates on the faults of the Personality in order to subdue them through Will-Power, and has no time to sneer at other people. These are the main propensities as far as we are concerned, though there are a

number of subsidiary ones, offshoots of those we have considered.

You will have noted that,

properly used, the Will can co-ordinate

itself with the Ego, whether to make full use of a propensity or

13

whether to subdue it, whatever it is conscious of being the best for the completed www.inspirational-quotes-and-thoughts.com

Personality. In order to effect this it can only make use of Will-Power. In future chapters we shall be tackling all these fourteen propensities in complete detail, with complete instructions as to how to make the best of them. Meanwhile, it is good for you to

yourself

through

analysis.

Such

a

preliminary study is vital if you are going to have the best brought out in you as a well-coordinated Personality.
