Chapter 7: syntax: word to clause FURTHER READING Introductions to functional grammar abound, as do introductions to syntax and grammar from many other perspectives. You will not have time to read them all: choose from the following (all are based on a functional perspective) for starters. Bloor and Bloor (2013) provide a readable and very useful entry to the area of functional grammar based on An Introduction to Functional Grammar (Halliday 1994, Halliday and Matthiessen 2004, Halliday and Matthiessen 2014) which despite its name is a complex account of the topic. Working With Texts (Beard 2007) provides a wide range of texts for practical analysis, most with a commentary so that the student is supported through their learning. A more discursive but similarly text-based approach to style can be found in Carter and Nash (1990) Seeing Through Language. In Style, Freeborn (1997) analyses texts ranging from the literary classics to newspaper articles in a book which demonstrates clearly the insights to be gained from a linguistic analysis of text. If you are interested in syntactic variability in World Englishes, then ‘Countability in World Englishes’ (Hall, et al. 2013) will be worth reading.
