CHEMICAL TECHNICIAN & TECHNOLOGIST #OperationsProcessSpecialist #CorrosionSpecialist #QualityControlTechnologist As a Chemical Technician or Technologist, you research new products and technologies all with the goal of keeping the oil and gas industry on the leading edge. If you love chemistry, this is for you.

HOW DO I GET HERE? A two- or three-year post-secondary diploma in chemistry, biochemistry, science or environmental engineering technology (or a related discipline) is typically required. Certification National certification for Chemical Technologists is available through the Canadian Society for Chemical Technology.

What does this career look like? Maybe you’re in a lab conducting experiments, creating the ideal cement formula for a new well. Or, you might find yourself testing hydraulic fracturing fluids. Or, you might be involved in environmental research and development - think new technologies, energy efficient extraction and new cutting-edge processes for land reclamation. Typical roles include:  Process Control Technicians contribute to the design, implementation and improvement of systems required to control temperature, pressure and flow of oil and gas during processing.

Certification in chemical engineering technology or in a related field is available through provincial associations of engineering/ applied science technologists and technicians and may be required by some employers. In Quebec, membership in the regulatory body is required to use the title “Professional Technologist.”

 Corrosion Specialists contribute to the design, implementation and improvement of cathodic protection programs.  Laboratory Technicians and Quality Control Technologists conduct chemical analyses on air, water, soil and oil.  Chemical Specialists research new and improved products and technologies for oil and gas recovery, surface separation and production or environmental management.
