Chief Architect X2 Training Series #8 Roofs Part 1 By: Dan Baumann
Roofs - Why are they so confusing? Chiefs auto roof tools are very limited in what they do Roofs are 50% what to draw and 50% how to draw For many, drawing in 3D requires a new thought process The roof tools have their own set of procedures The roof tools have their own set of rules Patience – understanding the tools takes practice

What is a Roof Plane?
5
ChiefExperts.com - Education, Resources & Support for Chief Architect Users
What is a Roof Plane? Has unique characteristics other items in Chief don’t have. It’s a 3D CAD box that can be placed in your plan anywhere. It can have any thickness, shape, angle and location in 3D It interacts with other roof planes automatically or by using th supplied the li d ttools. l If it covers a wall it will cut off the top of the wall If it’s higher than a wall, Chief will add a wall called an “Attic” wall to meet the bottom side of the roof. Framing fills roof planes based on it’s shape & thickness.

Chief Adds a “Baseline” to all of the walls on the exterior of your screen
7
ChiefExperts.com - Education, Resources & Support for Chief Architect Users
All Roofs start with a “Baseline” The baseline height is determined by the following formula: Elevation of the wall top plate p + Vertical Rafter Depth - Vertical Birdsmouth Depth = Baseline Height

How to Start an Automatic Roof Set up walls to define the roof in “Wall Specs – Roofs” Set Roof “Defaults” in “Edit All Roof Planes” Note: Use this to make global changes to existing roofs Rafter Depth will affect baseline location Get Platform and Ceiling Heights Correct Set Ceiling and Roof Thickness to match Truss settings Note: Auto Roofs are used to get the roofs started

Review of Automatic Roof Function ` ` ` ` ` ` ` `
Chief looks for all exterior walls It places a polyline on each wall called a “Baseline” The “Baseline Height” is set based on ceiling height next to exterior walls If you add “Raise Off Plate” it will be that much higher It starts building the roof places up from the “Baselines” Pit h iis d Pitch determined t i d by b Default D f lt or th the SSettings tti iin th the W Walls ll It attempts to join all of the edges together That’s it!
The Automatic Function will get 0% to 100% of the roofs correct 18

What The Automatic Roof Tool Does Not Do ` ` ` ` `
Doesn’t use any sort of database intelligence to add roofs Does not take any structural elements into consideration Does not read your mind It is not programmed to confuse you (that’s done by you) Will not add ‘Baselines” Baselines over interior wall automatically
The Automatic Function is a tool that is used to get your roofs started. At some point you will make a commitment to use the Manual Roof Tools and stop using the Automatic roof function completely. 19
