We are all looking forward to a typically busy Christmas season at South Kilvington. This newsletter details all our arrangements. Football and Netball clubs have now finished, the final sessions for French club and Fit club are next week. There are three after school club sessions for the Young Voices Choir on 26 November, 3 & 10 December. Please return the attached forms to school by Friday 26th November at the latest.
CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATIONS Following the opening of our extension in 2008, we started a tradition in which each child was invited to contribute one decoration, named and dated. Each year we enjoy getting out everyone’s decorations, including those donated by former pupils. We would like to invite all children who have joined the school since last Christmas to donate a decoration of their choice this year. Please send named decorations to the school office.
PANTOMIME VISIT We are keen to ensure all children have the opportunity to experience live theatre productions as part of their education and have arranged a visit to Harrogate Theatre to see Aladdin on Wednesday 2nd December. The production encourages lots of audience participation from the children and is suitable for the whole primary age range. A drink & ice cream will be provided during the interval. Children should wear school uniform. Friends of School make a large contribution to subsidise the cost of this event, however we do need to request a voluntary contribution of £5 for each child towards the full cost of the bus and tickets. As we are attending the afternoon performance, children will have an early party lunch (sandwiches etc) in school. If your child normally has a packed lunch but would like to join the school lunch that day, please order and pay for lunch on the attached form. We expect to arrive back at school at approximately 5.45pm. We will post on the website & text parents if there is a significant delay. Please arrange to collect your child at 5.45pm.
CHRISTINGLE SERVICE The Thirsk annual Christingle Service is at St Mary’s Church in Thirsk on Sunday 6th December at 3pm. Our senior recorder players will be joining with players from Carlton Miniott and Sowerby to perform during the service (and have already had permission slips sent home). All children and their families are warmly invited to attend the service, which is suitable for pre-school children too. Christingle collection tubes for the National Society will be distributed to all pupils on behalf of St Mary’s Church and should be returned to school or presented at the service.

CHRISTMAS DINNER Christmas dinner is on Thursday 17th December. Children may wear party clothes to school and will take part in Christmas activities during the day. Children who normally have packed lunch are welcome to enjoy a school Christmas dinner – please order and send payment on the attached form.
ADVENT Canon Reverend Rowling will be leading Collective Worship in school to start the advent season and this will be followed by assemblies on the Christmas theme throughout December. We are also delighted to be able to use a new advent calendar this year, which Mrs Rands has been making with the children this term. The calendar will be on display in the hall and features a traditional Christmas scene to which characters are added each day during the advent season. We also have a set of advent candles in school which are lit during Collective Worship each day.
FRIENDS OF SCHOOL Thank you to everyone who took part in our first ever Quiz Night last Friday. It was great to see parents, grandparents and family friends enjoying an evening together. The winning team (The Newbies) took home vouchers for White Horse Fish & Chips; some fantastic raffle prizes were won (including an overnight hotel stay) and the Old Oak Tree provided a tasty pie & peas supper. A special thank you is due to quizmaster Andrew McCormack, for putting the questions together. The event raised over £300. The next event is a Christmas Pyjama Party for children on Friday 11th December in school from 6-8.30pm. Look out for ticket details coming soon from FOS.
CHRISTMAS PERFORMANCES Children in Classes 1 & 2 will perform The Donkey Seller on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th December at 2pm in the school hall. Teachers will send out information about costumes. Seating in the hall is limited to comply with fire regulations, so tickets are required for all performances. Please make your request on the attached form. Initially a total of two tickets per family will be allocated and extra tickets may be requested; however, due to the higher number of children in school this year there are likely to be fewer extra tickets available. We are able to offer additional tickets for a morning dress rehearsal on Tuesday 15th December, which is also open to children who will be starting school next September. This performance would be particularly suitable for anyone wanting to bring pre-school children. All KS2 children will have a chance to watch too. Please request tickets using the attached form. Children in Classes 3 & 4 (KS2) will hold a carol service in St Wilfrid’s Church at 10am on Thursday 17th December, which family members are welcome to attend. They will be preparing a performance in school in the summer term instead of Christmas this year, due to the preparation needed for Young Voices in January.
CHRISTMAS CARDS A post box for Christmas cards will be in the corridor for sorting and delivery to classes from 7th December. Please do not send cards in before this date. Alternatively, children can choose the eco-friendly option sending one home-made card for display in the class to send their greetings to all their friends at school.
