EXPAT Iain Inglis is bringing his own cultural revolution to China with some Mao Tse-SONG! Because Chairman Mao would be proud of Welshman Iain, who has made dozens of appearances on local and national TV in China singing “red songs” – revolutionary songs which hail the wonders of socialism. His novelty act captured the hearts of Chinese television audiences everywhere and the Russian and German graduate has found himself called to all corners of the country to put on unique performances. “It was a bit of fun to start off with,” Cardiff-born Iain told Wales on Sunday from his home in Sanya, on the tropical island of Hanya, where he lives with his wife, Yu Yanling. “But the more performances I did, the more I was hooked.” He taught himself to sing his very first red song from a CD he bought on

holiday in China. Since then, he has gone on to reach the top 16 in China’s Got Talent and came fifth in the whole of China when he entered a national red song competition. “I’m not sure they would have let me come any higher than that,” he admitted. “Here, there aren’t many foreigners so it’s hard to go unnoticed. But when you have a tall, white foreigner from Wales who is singing songs about communism in Chinese – well, they seem to find it quite hilarious.” Red songs were once commonplace in communist countries. Lyrics tend to be a rallying cry to comrades about the virtues of communism. Iain first came across the niche genre, which is slowly dying out even in

China, while he was a student living in Russia. “I became friends with a group of Communists,” he explained. “They were a really lovely bunch of guys and they took me to a couple of demonstrations and rallies. Through that, I learnt about this state ideology and came across some of the former USSR’s red songs.” It wasn’t until after he graduated, this time living in Japan, that he taught himself his first Chinese red song from a CD he bought on holiday. After he met his wife and moved to China in 2004, he performed for the first time on local television. A lull in singing followed until 2009, when he entered a local competition held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of People’s Republic of China. He came fourth in this competition and hasn’t stopped since. His most high-profile performance on

China’s Got Talent rocketed an already successful show’s ratings. He said: “It’s been a massive success, but I was told when I went on the ratings shot up.” Iain was all set to enter the final, which would feature eight contestants on stage. He said: “As far as I knew, I was through to the final round. But the day before I was due to perform, I got a phone call saying Bureau of Broadcasting has said I wasn’t able to go on. “There was no real reason given – perhaps they weren’t very keen on having a foreigner singing songs about communism. “Of course, I was very disappointed, but that’s just how it is.” Since his exposure, Iain has continued singing red songs around the country, earning up to £5,000 per performance. His aim now is to cut down on the red songs and set up an English-language training centre in Sanya.

THE new owner of the Royal Barge the Queen sailed on to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee said he plans to “keep the charm” of the vessel – after moving it to Portugal. The Spirit of Chartwell underwent a £1m makeover for the Thames river pageant last June but has now been transformed into a luxury barge for tourists. The vessel, which carried the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in the 1,000-strong flotilla, is being used for cruises along the Douro River in Porto. Mario Ferreira, chief executive of new owners DouroAzul, said the Portuguese region provided the “perfect surrounding” for the famous barge. “I saw the glamour of the images of the Jubilee,” he said. “I saw the Royal Barge was so big and thought, ’what are they going to do with it afterwards?’ “I think the Douro Valley is the perfect surrounding. The ambience, our culture, the alliance between Portugal and England for more than 100 years. “I think it’s a great home for the vessel.” The Spirit of Chartwell was lavishly decorated for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in red, gold and purple, reminiscent of royal barges of the 17th and 18th centuries. Among the additions were thousands of flowers, an ornate gilded prow sculpture of Old Father Thames, symbols of royalty, and a large red velvet banner with a royal coat of arms made of more than half a million goldcoloured buttons. The 64m-long vessel now comprises 14 luxurious cabins, a royal suite, a restaurant, a piano bar and a spacious open-air upper-deck. Previous owner Philip Morrell had reportedly planned for the Royal Barge to sail between Kent and Surrey offering luxury cruises on the Thames through central London. However the plans were scuppered when an agreement could not be reached with the Port of London.
