oming off two impressive ECAC Hockey victories, including a big win over its archrival this past Saturday, the Clarkson University Hockey team takes a break from league play when it travels to the Mile-High City to participate in the Denver Cup this weekend. Guided by eighth-year head coach George Roll, associate coach Greg Drechsel and assistant coach Chris Rogles, the Golden Knights will battle Air Force in the first round, at 6:37 p.m. EST, and then take on Lake Superior State on Saturday, at 6:07 p.m. EST, in the classic format tournament. Host Denver University will play Lake Superior and Air Force in the late games on Friday and Saturday. Clarkson, led by junior captain Mark Borowiecki (Kanata, ONT) and assistant captains, senior Brandon DeFazio (Oakville, ONT) and junior Jake Morley (Ogdensburg, NY), owns a 6-4-2 overall record and will be playing its first games out of the North Country since October 8-9 when it went 1-1 at the Maverick Stampede in Omaha, NE. The Knights closed out a 10-game stretch in Northern New York, including nine games in Potsdam, with a 3-1 victory over Route 11 neighbor St. Lawrence University before an overflowing crowd of 3,721 fans at Cheel Arena on Saturday. The Green and Gold, who entered the Thanksgiving Holiday break tied for fifth in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 2-2-1 league mark, also defeated Harvard 3-1 in Potsdam on November 13. Freshman Matt Zarbo (Grand Island, NY), who tallied the winning goal in overtime in Clarkson’s 2-1 non-conference triumph over St. Lawrence in Lake Placid on October 30, came up big again on Saturday with two goals in the league victory over the Saints. Zarbo was named MLX SkatesECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week for the second time this season because of his efforts against St. Lawrence. Senior Scott Freeman (Whitby, ONT) connected for the game-winning goal with his 75th career point (22-53) and junior Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) was solid again in the Clarkson crease making 24 saves on 25 shots. Clarkson has much more balance in its lineup this season with 30 players on the roster, and it has shown up early on the stat sheet with 17 Knights scoring at least one goal and 22 players recording at least one point through the first 12 games. DeFazio, who has a five-game point streak, leads the Knights in scoring with 10 points on three goals and a team-high seven assists. Through eight games, Zarbo has netted a team-high five goals and is second on Clarkson in points with nine. Karpowich has seen the bulk of the work load in the Clarkson crease and posts a .921 save percentage, a 2.69 goals against average and a 6-4-2 record, including one shutout. Air Force, which has risen to be a power in Atlantic 3 THINGS TO Hockey over the past several years, has overcome a slow KNOW ABOUT start to the 2010-11 campaign and enters the Denver Cup playing its best hockey of the season. 2011

THE SERIES:

Leonard S. Ceglarski Endowed Chair Under the guidance of head coach George Roll and his staff, Clarkson University Hockey has enjoyed several seasons of tremendous success. With back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament, a pair of ECAC Hockey titles, and two 20win campaigns over the past four seasons, the Golden Knights, with Roll directing the way, have added numerous highlights to the tradition-laden program. After a pair of down years in 2008-09 and 2009-10, when injuries took a heavy toll on the Knights, Roll, along with associate coach Greg Drechsel and assistant coach Chris Rogles, will look to guide the Green and Gold back to their accustomed perch near the top of the Division I rankings. Roll and his staff have brought to the Potsdam, NY campus 17 National Hockey League Draft choices since taking the reigns of the program in the spring of 2003, including seven on this year’s roster. Along with the success on the ice, the Knights have also excelled in the classroom, and play an integral role in the campus and town communities through various works with local charities. During his five-year tenure, Roll has graduated 98 percent of his players. Last year’s team maintained a 2.81 grade point average. He has mentored two All-Americans, in Nick Dodge ’08 and Grant Clitsome ’08, an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I two-time honoree (Dodge), numerous ECAC Hockey All-Stars, and close to 20 selections to the ECAC All-Academic team. Four players from Roll’s heralded freshman class of 2005 – Clitsome, Dodge, Shawn Weller and Steve Zalewski - signed NHL contracts after completion of their collegiate careers. Guided the Knights to 2007 ECAC Tournament Championship and Clarkson's first NCAA Tournament.appearance since 1999 ... Guided Clarkson to 2004 ECAC Tournament Championship Game ... Clarkson will be facing Air Force for only the second time in its history. The Knights defeated the Falcons 17-0 in the opening round of the Syracuse Invitational Tournament on December 29, 1982 in the first meeting. Lake Superior leads the rivalry against Clarkson 6-5, which began with a 4-2 Lakers’ win in Potsdam on November 28, 1969, 5-3. The Knights had a three-game winning streak snapped in the series when Lake Superior defeated the Green and Gold 5-1 in Sault Ste. Marie on October 27, 2007 in the team’s last meeting. Clarkson posted its first shut out in the rivalry, 4-0 on October 26, 2007 in Michigan, for its last win over the Lakers. In their last tournament meeting, the Knights defeated Lake Superior 3-2 in the championship game of the Badger Showdown in Madison, WI on December 30, 2006 for their first regular-season tournament championship in 11 years. Clarkson’s first two wins in the rivalry are two of the biggest victories in the program’s 89-year history. In the quarterfinal round of the 1991 NCAA Tournament, Clarkson traveled to face off against the number-1 ranked Lakers in Sault Ste. Marie and shocked the Lakers, winning the best-of-three game series 2-1. The Knights took the first game 7-3 on March 22 and, after falling 6-2 the following night, Clarkson earned the right to advance to the Frozen Four with a thrilling 4-3 triumph on March 24. In their next meeting four years later, also an NCAA playoff game, Lake Superior edged the Green and Gold 5-4 in the first round of the 1995 East Regional held in Worcester, MA. Lauri Tuohimaa, one of six current Knights to play against the Lakers, has one goal in the series. The only other current Clarkson player to record a point against Lake Superior is Scott Freeman with one assist. George Roll is 3-2 against the Lakers.

MEN’S WEEKLY RELEASE

ECAC Hockey 51 South Pearl Street Albany, NY 12207 Phone: 518/4872288 Fax: 518/4872290 www.ecachockey.com

For Immediate Release: Monday, November 22, 2010 7

W EEKLY R ELEASE : S WEEPING T HROUGH T HE W EEKEND ALBANY, N.Y. Brown, Quinnipiac, and Yale each earned impressive sweeps last weekend and four points in the ECAC Hockey standings. The Bulldogs remain the lone undefeated team in League play (400), while Brown has earned points in three of four games and Quinnipiac earning points in four of six contests on the young season. Yale remains the only undefeated team in ECAC Hockey, as the Bulldogs earned a road sweep last weekend. Yale spotted Cornell a 21 lead before it erased the deficit midway through the contest with three straight goals to take its sixth straight game in the series, a 42 win over the Big Red before a packed house at Lynah Rink in ECAC Hockey action. The Bulldogs finished with a 3017 overall shot advantage while getting goals from Jesse Root, Broc Little, Chad Ziegler, and Brendan Mason. Yale senior Ryan Rondeau needed 15 saves to earn his fifth win of the year. He allowed the Big Red a pair of powerplay goals on six attempts. Mike Devin and Joe Devin each scored a goal for Cornell, while netminder Mike Garman collected 26 saves in the loss for the Big Red. Yale would complete the Central New York sweep by beating Colgate 64 at Starr Rink Saturday. Antoine Laganiere had a goal and three points while Kenny Agostino, Andrew Miller, and Jesse Root each had a goal and one assist as the Bulldogs improved to 710 overall, 400 in conference play. Colgate got goals from senior captain Brian Day, sophomore Robbie Bourdon, and rookie Mike McCann in the loss. Yale had a slight (3433) advantage in shots, but got 29 saves and some big plays from senior Ryan Rondeau, who has all but one of Yale's wins this season. Brown pickedup a sweep of its own over Colgate (52) and Cornell (42) last weekend. It was the Bears’ first road sweep of the upstate New York foes since the 199293 season when Brown won 52 against Colgate and 42 against Cornell in February of 1993, head coach Brendan Whittet's junior season with the Bears. On Friday the Bears’ special team play was the difference as they scored two powerplay goals, one shorthanded goal, and stopped the Raiders on all five of their chances with a manadvantage. Junior Jack Maclellan, who was one of five players to earn multiple points on the night, led the offense with a goal and two assists. Mike Clemente finished with 28 saves for the win, while Alex Evin made 20 saves for the Raiders in taking the loss. Senior Jesse Fratkin's goal midway through the third period gave the Bears a twogoal cushion (31 lead) and Brown survived Cornell's late comeback attempt to claim a 32 victory over the Big Red Saturday evening in Ithaca. Mike Clemente stopped 20 of 22 shots for his second win of the season for Brown, while freshman goaltender Andy Iles made 16 saves in the loss. Cornell finished the night 1for5 on the powerplay, while killing off all three of Brown's manadvantage opportunities. Clarkson closed out a fivegame homestand by downing rival St. Lawrence, 31 Saturday at Cheel Arena. Freshman Matt Zarbo scored two goals and jun ior Paul Karpowich made 24 saves in the win for the Golden Knights. St. Lawrence got on the scoreboard with Kyle Essery’s first collegiate goal, but that was all for the Saints, who suffered their third consecutive loss to fall to 273 overall and to 230 in ECAC Hockey. St. Lawrence outshot Clarkson 2518, but the Golden Knights, backstopped by Karpowich, were perfect shorthanded, killing off all five of the Saints powerplays. Quinnipiac pickedup four League points last weekend by posting home wins at TD Bank Sports Center over LAST WEEK’S RESULTS Dartmouth, 20 Friday and Harvard, 54 Saturday. Sophomore Eric Hartzell stopped a careerhigh 31 shots on Friday, November 19: goal by Dartmouth for his second career shutout in a 20 win against the Big Green. On Friday against Colgate, Clemente made 28 saves on 30 shots, including 11 in each of the final 2 periods, while earning 2nd star honors. The next night at Cornell, Clemente made 20 saves on 22 shots, including 10 in a scoreless first period, while helping Brown to take a 10 lead. Three of the four goals allowed over the week end came with the opposition skating an extra attacker, includ ing both of Cornell's, which scored on a delayed penalty against Brown and then on a 6 on 4 late in the game with a power play and the Big Red net empty. Colgate's 2nd goal also came during an extra attacker situation.

Dennis Robertson (Fr., D Fort St. John, BC) For the weekend, Robertson posted 1g2a3pts totals and continues to lead the team with 4 goals, all on the powerplay. Then after Colgate tied the score at 11, Robertson struck for his 4th goal of the year just 1:54 later to give the Bears a lead they would never relinquish. Following the game, he was named Time Warner Cable Sports Player of the Game. On Saturday at Cornell, Robertson made a headsup play leading to the eventual gamewinning goal. After Mike Clemente made a save on a Cornell pointblank attempt, Robertson cleared the puck out to Jarred Smith, who passed to Jesse Fratkin, who gave Brown a 31 lead with what would prove to be the gamewinner. Finished +2 against the Big Red. Through his first six games, Robertson has tallied 6 points (4g, 2a) and leads the team in both goals and powerplay goals.
