lengthy stretch of ECAC Hockey League games on the road got off to a disappointing start for the Clarkson University Hockey team as the Golden Knights suffered their first back-to-back losses of the season. Coming off a weekend sweep in non-league play when they combined for 11 goals in wins over RIT (5-2) and St. Lawrence (6-2) to open the New Year, Clarkson looked poised to make a successful run in the 2006 opening portion of conference play with its trip to New York’s Capital District region. The Knights, however, came away with two disheartening defeats. Ranked 13th in the country entering last weekend, the Green and Gold suffered a 5-0 shutout to Union on Friday in Schenectady and then fell short in a late rally at Rensselaer on Saturday, falling to the Engineers 4-3 in Troy. After a six-game non-league stretch, Clarkson resumed ECACHL play by suffering a weekend sweep in the Albany area for the third straight season. Union gained a measure of revenge against the Golden Knights for last year’s postseason playoff loss at Messa Rink by handing Clarkson its first shutout in their 37-game series. A disastrous second period put Clarkson in a big hole and a late third-period rally fell short as the Knights lost at Rensselaer, extending their winless skid against the Engineers to six games (0-5-1).

Guided by third-year head coach George Roll, associate coach Greg Drechsel and assistant coach Jean-Francois Houle, Clarkson owns a 12-8-2 overall record and is tied for sixth in the ECACHL standings with a 5-4-1 conference mark, just five points out of first. The going will not get any easier for the Knights, however, as they close out a four-game road trip this weekend with a series against a pair of nationallyranked Central NY rivals. On Friday, Clarkson faces off against 17th-ranked Colgate in Hamilton, NY and on Saturday the Knights battle two-time defending league champion and 8th-ranked Cornell in Ithaca. Clarkson then returns to the North Country in the final weekend of January to take on current league-leader St. Lawrence in a Friday-Saturday home-and-home series. Challenging for the top spot in the ECACHL standings, Colgate University snapped out of a six-game tailspin (0-4-2) with this past Saturday’s 3-1 win over Quinnipiac at Yale University’s Ingalls Rink. The Raiders, guided by 13th-year head coach Don Vaughan, are ranked among the Top 20 teams in the country with an 11-6-5 overall record. Colgate, which lost 5-3 at Princeton last Friday, is one point out of first place in the league standings with a 7-2-1 conference mark. Colgate, which opens a fourgame home stand this weekend, is 6-1-3 at Starr Rink this season. Cornell University, which hosts St. Lawrence on Friday to open a five-game home stand, will be motivated to get back on the winning track after suffering a 3-0 loss at Princeton on Saturday. On Friday, the Big Red ran their unbeaten streak to nine games (7-0-2) with a 6-0 shutout over Quinnipiac in New Haven, CT before falling to the Tigers. Guided by 11th-year head coach Mike Schafer, Cornell is ranked among the Top 10 in the nation with an 11-4-2 overall record. The Big Red are tied for fourth in the league, two points a head of Clarkson, with a 6-3-1 ECACHL slate. Cornell owns a 5-2-1 record at Lynah Rink this season. www.clarksonathletics.com

Last year, the Big Red swept Clarkson in the regular season, winning 4-2 in Ithaca and 3-0 in Potsdam. Cornell also faced the Knights for the second straight season in the ECACHL quarterfinal round at Lynah Rink and knocked off the Green and Gold 2-0 (5-0, 3-2 ot) in the best-of-three game series. Clarkson’s last wins in the series were in the 2004 postseason when the Knights stunned the Big Red on their home ice in the quarterfinal round by taking the last two games in the playoffs (5-4, 5-1) to win the series and move on to the championship tournament in Albany. Cornell is unbeaten against the Knights in their last eight (7-01) regular season match-ups. Clarkson’s last regular-season win over Cornell was a 2-0 shutout at Cheel Arena on February 24, 2001. The Knights’ last regular season win at Lynah Rink was a 4-1 triumph on March 6, 1999. David Cayer has been the top offensive threat for the Green and Gold against the Big Red with three points (2-1) through four games. Kyle McNulty is 01 with a .865 save percentage and a 3.61 GAA in 83 minutes of action against Cornell. David Leggio has stopped all 18 shots he has faced against the Big Red in 40 minutes of action.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

St. Lawrence and Princeton Sweep Weekend Games

Grant Goeckner-Zoeller (Jr., F), Princeton

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Two teams swept and four others split their ECAC Hockey League games over the weekend, and there was history in the making. In New Jersey, the Princeton Tigers won both games against nationally ranked Colgate and Cornell while in New York, St. Lawrence claimed sole possession of first place in the standings by defeating Rensselaer and Union. Earning two league points after splitting their games this past weekend were Colgate, Cornell, Rensselaer and Union. Brown and Yale also faced each other, and came away with a 3-3 tie. In non-league play, the Bears beat Connecticut, while Yale and Dartmouth both fell to New Hampshire. Princeton turned in two stellar performances over the weekend, sweeping the CNY teams for the first time since the final games of the 2001-02 regular season. The Tigers had gone 39 league weekends without a sweep. Saturday's game against Cornell was a shutout and it was one of historical proportions, as it was the first blanking of the Big Red by the Tigers in 42 years. Senior netminder Eric Leroux made 35 saves en route to the win and in earning Goaltender of the Week honors. Grant Goeckner-Zoeller led Princeton's offensive attack, as he netted three goals on the weekend. The senior, who was the Player of the Week, scored two power-play goals in the win vs. Colgate and had a breakaway goal against Cornell. St. Lawrence's sweep was also of note, as it marked the first road sweep of the Capital District trip since 1999-2000. It was also the Saints' first road sweep of the season and just its third in the last three years. The team's offense put up seven goals on the weekend and the defense held tough. Freshman blue liner Zach Miskovic helped out on both ends of the ice, earning Rookie of the Week honors in the process. On offense, he scored his first collegiate goal in the win over Union. Defensively, he blocked several shots and was part of a penalty kill unit that stopped 15 of 17 power-play attempts (.882) on the weekend. While Princeton downed both Colgate and Cornell, the two teams were still able to claim two points on the road, as each defeated Quinnipiac. David McKee extended his ECACHL shutout record to 17 with the win over the Bobcats, while rookies were the key to Colgate's success, as seven were in Saturday's lineup and they accounted for two goals and four assists in the win. Union and Rensselaer were also winners over the weekend, as each claimed victory vs. Clarkson. The Dutchmen kept the Golden Knights off the board, and senior Kris Mayotte earned his fifth shutout of the year. Saturday night's game in Troy was a battle, as the Engineers held off the Knights for the win. After one period of action, Rensselaer was down 1-0, but the Engineers rallied, scoring four unanswered goals in the second to take the lead. Clarkson clawed back in it with two goals in the final period, but RPI held on for the 4-3 win. Saturday afternoon had Brown and Yale facing off in league play and the end result was a 33 tie. The two teams traded goals in the game, with the Bulldogs going ahead 3-2 at 16:28 in the second with a goal by Bill LeClerc. The Bears wasted little time in the third, tying it up at 1:13 on a score by Brian McNary. Neither team was able to get the go-ahead score, with Brown's D'Alba holding strong with 23 total saves and Yale's Alec Richards staying tough with 33. continued page 3 ...

Two teams sweep, from page 1 ...

Colgate and Cornell. Union and Rensselaer are also on the road, visiting Yale and Brown. Both games at Colgate this weekend will be televised by Time Warner Cable in Central New York. With Princeton and Harvard in the middle of exams and not competing this week, their travel partners -- Dartmouth and Quinnipiac -- will play non-league games. The Big Green takes on Sacred Heart and Holy Cross this weekend, while the Bobcats will play two games at RIT. For complete information on the ECAC Hockey League and its 12 teams, log online at www.ecachockeyleague.com.

Both teams also played non-league games last week, with Brown downing Connecticut and Yale falling to New Hampshire. The Bear's win over UConn halted the team's 11-game winless streak. Dartmouth's lone game of the week came against UNH in the annual "Battle for the RiverStone" contest. It was another wild one, as there were nine goals scored in the game, with Dartmouth falling short 5-4. In league games this weekend, the North Country travels to Central New York, with Clarkson ad St. Lawrence playing at

2005-06 Commissioners’ Cup Series -- ECACHL Still Maintains Lead About the Cup Series Commissioners from the nation's six Division I ice hockey conferences have announced a 33-game series to be played among the conferences throughout the 2005-2006 season. The total number of games designated for this year's competition has been increased from 21 to 33 and any Division I program that did not participate a year ago will take part this season. Each conference participates in 11 designated contests, each league playing five home games, five away, and one at a neutral site. "This is again an opportunity to create a little added excitement to regular season games for the fans," said Hockey East Commissioner Joe Bertagna. "We have again tried to choose games that collectively give every league a fair shot at this particular title." A otal of 53 different schools will participate in the series, including every institution in College Hockey America and Atlantic Hockey. All but one school in the ECACHL, WCHA and Hockey East will play and all but two in the CCHA. There are 18 appearances from teams who competed in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. Every school has been scheduled through the two years of the Cup's existence.

Where Things Stand Only two Commissioners’ Cup games remain and the outcome of Year Two in this competition is still in doubt. Three games over the holidays left the ECACHL still leading the standings but it will all come down to February 4-5 when the series ends. The winner of Wayne State (CHA) at Northern Michigan (CCHA) on February 4 — unless the game is tied — will vault over the ECACHL, who will have last crack at defending its title on the next day when Yale hosts UConn (AHA). After an idle month of January, the Commissioners’ Cup Series will resume — and conclude — on the weekend of February 4-5.
