As a very successful season begins to wind down, the playoff picture for the Crusaders is starting to take shape. A home sweep by the now-16th ranked NNU volleyball team keeps them in first place in the GNAC and on course for a national tournament berth. The NNU women’s soccer team scored an important road win at Simon Fraser to keep their GNAC postseason hopes alive, and the NNU men’s soccer team went unbeaten in two roads games and finds itself in the No. 5 spot in the first NCAA West Region poll, which was released today. Also in action were the Crusader runners as cross country tuned up for next weekend’s GNAC meet with a strong showing at the Lewis and Clark Invitational. VOLLEYBALL: The Crusader volleyball team stretched its home win streak to 10 straight matches and maintained its hold on first place in the GNAC with sweeps of St. Martin’s (25-17, 25-23, 25-13) and Western Oregon (25-23, 25-22, 25-23). Thursday against the Saints, Kendra Bodine led the way with 12 kills while Taylor Roberts added 12 digs and Michelle Terpstra dished out 32 assists. Elayna Rice — who is No. 3 on the team in kills (175) and digs (209) — sat out the match, resting a sprained ankle, yet the Crusaders didn’t miss a beat. Rice returned to the lineup Saturday as NNU topped the Wolves. Andrea Terpstra and Taylor VanValey led the offense, each recording 10 kills.

Michelle Terpstra again dished out 32 assists and Roberts led the defense with 15 digs in
the win. The sweep sets up a huge Saturday night match at Anchorage, Alaska, where the Crusaders and Seawolves — currently tied atop the league standings — will battle. MEN’S SOCCER: A long road trip to the Dakotas started off with a disappointing 1-1 tie for the Crusaders against host the University of Mary on Thursday. NNU’s only goal came off an own goal, as weather — and the Marauders — stymied the Crusader offense. NNU bounced back Saturday in winning style, battling its way to a 1-0 win over the South Dakota School of Mines. Rene Duevel had the game-winning goal while Alfredo E. Ontiveros made 2 saves in net, recording his sixth shutout of Photo by Kari Stetson the season and the 15th of his career at NNU — the all-time Northwest Nazarene’s Kendra Bodine goes up for one of her 12 kills in the Crusaders win over St. Martin’s on Thursday night. Alfredo E. Crusader record. Ontiveros Ontiveros added a 1 save in the Crusaders draw on Thursday, earning him GNAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this fall. While the weekend road trip did not vault NNU back into the NSCAA’s Top 25 poll — the Crusaders were ranked No. 22 earlier this season — a successful season to date did earn NNU the No. 5 spot in the first NCAA Division II West Region poll released today. The top 6 teams in that poll at the end of the season earn berths to nationals. WOMEN’S SOCCER: Lexi Fesenbek set up both goals Thursday afternoon, tying the single-season school record for assists in a season and helping NNU complete a season sweep of Simon Fraser with a 2-0 victory. Fesenbek has 10 assists already this fall, with four games remaining. She tied the mark set by Randi Hufford in 2001 and by Denise Thuline in 1999. She set up Makena Dandley, who scored her first collegiate goal, and Laura Seymour in the win. Daniele Ortiz made 5 saves in goal for her third shutout of the season. Saturday, the Crusaders took on the unbeaten Vikings at Western Washington and battled hard, but still fell 2-0. Ortiz made 9 saves in the game. NNU now hosts four straight games to close out the regular season with a GNAC playoff berth still in sight. CROSS COUNTRY: An extra week of rest suited the Crusaders, who got a pair of top-10 individual finishes and two strong team efforts at the Lewis and Clark Invitational at McIver State Park outside of Portland, Ore., on Saturday. Freshman Isaac Mitchell continued his phenomenal debut season with a personal-best time of 25 minutes, 28.1 seconds to finish 3rd overall on the men’s 8-kilometer course. His efforts earned him GNAC Male Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this season. He led a strong effort by the NNU men, who were 7th as a team in a 16-team field. The Crusader ladies also took 7th in a 12-team field, led by Susanna Fleming. Fleming nearly had a Isaac PR on the women’s 6K course, finishing 7th overall in 23:27.80 for the Crusaders. Mitchell NNU’s runners now get an extra week of rest once again before heading to the GNAC Championship meet hosted by Western Oregon on Nov. 1.
