than assorted lengths of boards, slowly come together. Some cabinets are just skeletons awaiting their hardwood faces and doors while others are closer to completion. For Born, this is his livelihood. He is a cabinet maker. Several projects lay scattered throughout his large open shop — all in varying stages of completion.

“These are two different jobs,” Born said pointing to two cabinets in one corner. “One is going in Pawnee. It is a red oak.” In another area of the shop more cabinets await completion. “These are for another house,” he said as he kept walking. “This is for an entire kitchen in George West. There is 100 feet of cabinets in here right now.” For the past seven or so years, Born, who owns Born Enterprises, has been working full-time creating cabinets — something he learned during a parttime job while in college. “I actually started out framing houses and found out there was a little bit better money in doing cabinetry,” he said. “I was working while attending college in Houston and I took a side job that fit into that schedule. I wanted to be a graphics designer, which is basically what y’all do at the newspaper.” An arm injury ultimately stopped him from pursuing that career but there was something else he was starting to enjoy. “Sometimes we would complete the houses 100 percent,” he said referring back to his days framing houses. “We ended up doing some small cabinets there and I was learning. “I ended up liking that. I took some on the side and then I got to where I was doing it all the time and I just ran with it.” Starting his own business did-

Perry Born, in the maroon shirt, combines his background in the field of graphics arts and passion for woodworking together to create custom cabinets. He and his wife, D’Arcy, moved to Pawnee about 1 1/2 years ago opening his cabinet shop. Born has been building cabinets full-time about seven years. He now has an apprentice, Joaquin Morales, shown above in the white T-shirt. The photo at the top of this page is of the cabinets built by Born for the home of “Pistol” Rosebrock. n’t happen overnight. “To get going with it, probably took about four years before I felt comfortable enough to go on my own full time,” he said. “After seven years, I got real good at it... “I still learn stuff every day. The minute you quit learning you may as well do something else.” While he didn’t finish his degree, he still uses what he learned when he is crafting cabinets. “As a matter of fact there is an artwork to the cabinetry. They are not prefab,” he said as he took a break from his work. “There is a lot of art that goes into a cabinet.” Born was no stranger to working with wood. He had learned a lot about the art from his father, Perry Born Jr. His dad still builds furniture as a hobby — even at over 70 years old. In the background of the shop, the saw was humming as Morales cut s m a l l strips of wood — the face of cabinets he w a s f i n ishing

for Born. The two men met after Born moved to Pawnee and Born hired him to help with the expansion of his shop. “He needed help here and I came and helped,” Morales said. “He said, ‘Would you like to come help build cabinets.’ I said, ‘I don’t know how to build cabinets but I will try.’” That was about a year ago and Morales is still learning the fine points of the trade. “He showed me how to do it, how to cut and how to sand,” Morales said. Like Born, Morales has no regrets about leaving the framing trade. “It is a lot better. It is a finer work. It is more pretty,” he said. “I like it more than framing. You have to be more exact with the measurements. We need to make sure we cut everything right. If we cut it wrong, we have to cut another piece.” Even with this experience under his belt, Morales knows he still has much more to learn. “I have learned a lot but I still need to learn a lot more,” he said. “Every day I learn something different.” Like Born, Morales knows it is the small details in the cabinets that matter. “We need to make sure there is good light so we can see any scratches,” he said. “When you (See Cabinetry, Page 10B)

Artic Apple? It’s the pitts Spanking is responsible Have you heard of the new scented deodorants? As if Shower Fresh, Powder Scented and Lavender weren't enough, now there's Arctic Apple, Vanilla Chai and Brazilian Cherry. It's like a dessert under there. What will they think of next? When it comes to deodorant, I'm a traditionalist. I'm also very sensitive. I go with Unscented. My deodorant has to be without scent (because sometimes even Unscented has a fragrance). When I can't find my regular brand, I pop open containers at the store and whiff them to make sure that there is no smell emanating from them. I can't stand the smell of perfume or fruit under my arms. Sugar-sweet pits drive me mad. I don't want to smell like morning dew or watermelon or blackberry pie. I want to smell like nothing. I am very selective about the deodorant I buy to achieve that smell. Where are the wackos that

like to smell armpits, anyway? Oh, dear, is that Kuku Coco Butter deodorant you are wearing? Yes? I thought so. It smells lovely. Ick! What kind of freak is going to appreciate your pit scent? I recently read an article about how deodorant companies are trying to give consumers the option of matching scents with moods or outfits. Give me a break! Can spare 10 minutes in the morning to decide which smell best suits your level of optimism for the day? What if you put on peach-scented antiperspirant and got fired? Can you blame in on the deodorant or is your life just the pits?

I lived in Europe for more than a decade. Up until recently, few Europeans wore antiperspirant. Most of what you could buy were perfumed sprays that were designed to cover up one's natural smell, not diminish perspiration. And, let me tell you, it was like stuffing roses in your hiking boots. Sure you can smell the roses, but that ain't the only scent coming out of there. I think deodorant manufacturers are trying to compete with perfume manufacturers. But, if I want to smell like perfume, I use perfume. I want my deodorant manufacturer to keep his eyes on the prize. Make a deodorant that doesn't stain, reduces sweat and keeps my pits from smelling. That's really all I need. If you like the idea of underarm scents, raise your hand. On second thought, put you arm down. Adrian Jackson is a freelance writer in Beeville, Texas.

discipline for unruly children QUESTION: I have never spanked my 3-year-old because I am afraid it will teach her to hit others and be a violent person. Do you think I am wrong? DR. DOBSON: You have asked an important question that reflects a common misunderstanding about child management. First, let me emphasize that it is possible — even easy — to create a violent and aggressive child who has observed this behavior at home. If he is routinely beaten by hostile, volatile parents, or if he witnesses physical violence between angry adults, or if he feels unloved and unappreciated within his family, that child will not fail to notice how the game is played. Thus, corporal punishment that is not administered according to carefully thought-out guidelines is a risky thing. Being a parent carries no right to slap and intimidate a child because you had a bad day or are in lousy mood. It is this kind of

unjust discipline that causes some well-meaning authorities to reject corporal punishment as a method of discipline. Just because a technique is used wrongly, however, is no reason to reject it altogether. Many children desperately need this resolution to their disobedience. In those situations when the child, aged 2 to 10, fully understands what he is being asked to do but refuses to yield to adult leadership, an appropriate spanking is the shortest and most effective route to an attitude adjustment. When he lowers his head, clenches his fists and makes it clear he is going for broke, justice must speak swiftly and eloquently. Not only does this response not create aggression in a boy or girl, it helps them control their impulses and live in harmony with various forms of benevolent authority throughout life. Many people disagree, of course. I can only tell you that there is not a single well-designed scien-

Cabinetry can become a family affair (Continued from Page 1B) you will see the scratches.” It takes about three weeks to finish a complete set of cabinets, depending upon the intricacies of the work. Everything is done by hand — but this takes specialized tools. “I have been collecting tools since I was 16 years old and right now I am 35,” he said. “They get more expensive the more you get into this. You just take it a little bit at a time.” Originally from Houston, Born moved from there to Needville and eventually moved his business to Pawnee. “I just set my mind to it,” he said. That leap of faith has paid off. “I was really nervous about moving here because I wasn’t sure if there would be the need for it like there was in Needville,” he said. “We have not stopped at all. We had not even got finished with the shop before we got started. We work seven days a week sometimes. We try not to. About nine hours is all you want but sometimes you have to work longer.” There was another reason for him and his wife, D’Arcy, to move to move to Pawnee. “I bought this place about nine years ago and we were driving here every weekend,” he said.

“We love it down here. (Needville) just wasn’t home. “My wife has the bragging rights. She shot the largest deer that has been shot on this property, a 10-point with an 18-1/2-inch spread.” This fall, Born will take a two-day break when dove season opens. “We will throw a heck of a get-together here,” he said. “About 14 people will show up and we will be dove hunting out here.” Born doesn’t expect his children, Zoie and Colby, to take over the business when they get older. “They love to come out. They help sand and clean up,” he said. “I hope they go to college and do something else. “At least if they go to college they can open up a little wider than what I have... “They are very intelligent children and will probably do something other than what their father does.” His son enjoys being in the shop, but at 6 years old, he isn’t quite ready for the sanders, routers and saws. “He thinks he is but he isn’t,” Born said with a Jason Collins photo bit of pride in his voice. “He comes out here and asks me questions and causes me to make mis- Perry Born III, of Pawnee, clamps and glues boards together to make a counter top for a customer. takes and things like that.”

tific study that confirms the hypothesis that spanking by a loving parent breeds violence in children. QUESTION: We hear a great deal these days about the demise of the nuclear family. Do you think these reports are exaggerated? DR. DOBSON: Unfortunately, no. I’m convinced that the threat we’re facing in the area of family breakdown is very real. It’s a trend that involves a huge number of people in the United States and around the world, and their ranks are growing exponentially. According to the census figures released in May 2001, the nuclear family has continued its downward spiral that began in the early ‘70s. Indeed, it is now in an unfettered free fall. Our local newspaper in Colorado Springs, The Gazette, shouted the news in 72-point type: “Nuclear Family Fading.” The Boston Herald, in a column written by Don Feder, carried the headline, “Nuclear Family in Meltdown.” Allen Carlson of the Howard Center for Family, Religion and Society said, “We are moving toward a post-family society.” Sadly and ominously, these assessments are true. This Godordained institution, which has prevailed in almost every culture on Earth for more than 5,000 years, is unraveling right in front of our eyes. Here are some of the most disturbing findings from the report: Households headed by unmarried partners grew by almost 72 percent during the past decade, most of them involving people living together out of wedlock. Households headed by single mothers increased by more than 25 percent. San Antonio 37 Tilden
