Teach Players • Teach players to respect the rules, their opponents, opposing players, their teammates, parents, coaches and coordinators. • Pursue opportunities to teach your players about appropriate court practices and sportsmanship on a weekly basis. Each match is a learning opportunity. • Stress importance of sportsmanship as highly as development of strokes and strategy. Encourage Parents • Encourage parents to reinforce sportsmanship goals off the court and review proper on court practices with their kids. They can be your biggest asset. • Hold a parent meeting, and provide parents with literature that emphasizes our goals, allows them to understand tennis practices, and encourages them to be their child’s number one role model. • Communicate with parents about the positive and negative aspects of their child’s sportsmanship. Lead by Example • Understand the criteria of good sportsmanship on and off the court. • Hold yourself accountable, and set your personal sportsmanship standards as high as possible. • Reward players for effort, not just outcome. • Use encouragement and positive reinforcement as your primary method of motivating. Coaches are in the best position to set the bar high for the level of sportsmanship that is expected to be displayed by his or her team member and fans. Coaches are urged to remember this responsibility and to model appropriate behavior on a consistent basis---win or lose.
