COALITION RESPONDS TO APPOINTMENT OF UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS SYSTEM REGENTS AUSTIN—Governor Rick Perry today appointed three members to The University of Texas System Board of Regents for terms to expire Feb. 1, 2019. The three appointments are: Ernest Aliseda of McAllen, Jeff Hildebrand of Houston and Paul Foster of El Paso. Foster currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Board. In response to these appointments the Coalition issued the following statement: “The Coalition was formed to promote excellence in higher education and fight back against misguided reforms and heavy-handed governance that could damage quality at our institutions. We feel strongly that regents who govern these vital state institutions must be conflict-free, qualified and have appropriate experience to govern, not micromanage – we look forward to the Senate Committee on Nominations hearings to learn how Governor Perry’s nominees compare to those qualifications. Given recent concerns about micromanagement, we trust the Committee will carefully question these nominees about the appropriate role and responsibility of governing boards.” About the Coalition The Texas Coalition for Excellence in Higher Education was launched in the summer of 2011 by a group of concerned citizens who believe strongly in the power of higher education to transform lives, build our economy and shape Texas’ future. Formed in response to a growing concern over recommendations being floated that could have long-term damaging effects on our institutions of higher learning, the Coalition hopes to advance a thoughtful, constructive and transparent dialogue around higher education in Texas, seeking to improve the quality educational opportunities for all Texans.
