COALITION RESPONDS TO IMPEACHMENT VOTE AUSTIN—On the heels of a 7-1 vote in favor of moving forward with the impeachment process against UT System Regent Wallace L. Hall Jr., the Coalition issued the following statement: “This is a somber day. No one is excited about a vote like this but it was, unfortunately, warranted. Our Coalition has been gravely concerned about the governance of our state’s public institutions, and today’s actions confirm our concern has been justified. We applaud the Members of the Transparency Committee for their diligence in this matter, and for standing up for what is right and in the best interests of Texas taxpayers, despite opposition from outside forces. Regent Hall’s refusal to step aside necessitated this vote – it was the right thing for this process to move forward. As articulated by the Members of the Transparency Committee, the distraction and dysfunction caused by Regent Hall’s actions has caused substantial damage to UT Austin and the UT System, and the people of Texas deserve better from those given responsibility to govern.” About the Coalition The Texas Coalition for Excellence in Higher Education was launched in the summer of 2011 by a group of concerned citizens who believe strongly in the power of higher education to transform lives, build our economy and shape Texas’ future. Formed in response to a growing concern over recommendations being floated that could have long-term damaging effects on our institutions of higher learning, the Coalition hopes to advance a thoughtful, constructive and transparent dialogue around higher education in Texas, seeking to improve the quality educational opportunities for all Texans. ###
