Head Coach Rick Goerlitz

During the 2006-07 season, Coach Goerlitz helped the women’s team garner its first top-five NEISDA finish in program history, while the men’s team earned a spot in the top 10 for the first time.

Under Coach Goerlitz’s guidance, Breien Milton (’07) became the first Colby-Sawyer swimmer to earn an NCAA “B” cut time. Over her career as a Charger, Milton was named 2004 Swimmer of the Meet at the NEISDA Championships and received the 2007 Kay Fromer Award. 9th Season

Wil McCarthy (‘09) was also the first male swimmer to compete at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Open Championships for Colby-Sawyer, finishing 16th in the 100 butterfly last season. Coach Goerlitz began his career as an assistant coach at SUNY Potsdam from 1991-94 before serving as the head coach at Gannon University and the College of St. Rose, producing two AllAmericans at Gannon. Goerlitz, a 1993 graduate of SUNY Potsdam, holds a degree in Mathematics with concentrations in Health Science and Computer Science.

Season Preview

A talented group of sophomores return in 2009 for the Chargers. Owen Worden (New Bedford, Mass.) leads the cast and has shown he is one of the team’s top distance freestyle and IM swimmers.Ryan Sloss (Cumberland, R.I.) and Jack Nessen (Beverly, Mass.) will compete in the backstroke event and will be the team’s top backstroke swimmers.

Heading into his ninth season, Head Coach Rick Goerlitz is excited about this year’s swimming and diving squad, as he has recruited a strong freshman class and is returning many key contributors. He is confident that the Chargers can improve on last year’s finish at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships.

The Chargers added two freshman this year. Mike Gauvin (Marshfield, Mass.) and Jimmy Montanari (Ridgefield, Conn.) will compete in freestyle events. Both of these swimmers should have an immediate impact to the success of the men’s swimming and diving program.

The men’s team, which continues to improve, will be led by its two seniors Ryan Martin (Chester, N.H.) and Dave Mikita (Ansonia, Conn.). Coach Goerlitz will look to Martin and Mikita for their guidance and experience to teach the younger members of the team.

The Colby-Sawyer women’s team returns a solid group of upperclassmen and coach expects the team will improve from a season ago. Coach Goerlitz is also excited about the newcomers to this year’s squad and believes they will immediately help the team get better.

Martin has proven himself over the past three years and holds or shares seven school records. He will once again be one of the most talented athletes on the squad this season. Mikita will lead the diving team this year and has performed well over the past couple of seasons.

The Chargers will be led by senior Danielle Bowen (Litchfield, N.H.). Bowen has been one of the most consistent and talented swimmers in recent history. Her positive leadership in and out of the pool will surely impact the performances of the freshmen. Bowen will be the Chargers’ top backstroke swimmer this season.

There are three juniors on the team this year including Jeffrey Marc-Aurele (Ipswich, Mass.), Daniel Saltalamacchia (Sandown, N.H.) and Max Gaughan (Dayton, Ohio). All three should have a solid year in the pool, swimming freestyle and sprint events.

Season Preview

The talented group of freshman new to the team include Katherine Donohue (Sandy Hook, Conn.), Hannah Fairbank (Metheun, Mass.), Meg Hebert (Kennebunk, Maine), Allie Hesketh (Windham, N.H.), Kendra Hotchkiss (Weare, N.H.), Rachel Murad (Storrs, Juniors Stephanie Carr (Clare- Conn.), Emily Olson (Lynn, Mass.) mont, N.H.), Krisi Loh (East and Gabrielle Velez (Arlington, Windsor, N.J.), Amanda McCusk- Mass.). er (Westford, Mass.) and Allison Piersall (Roxbury, Conn.) are all very talented in the freestyle event and should post good times once again this season.

Joining Bowen as the veterans on the team are fellow seniors Stephanie Smith (Georgetown, Mass.) and Kallyn Smith (Northfield, Conn.). Stephanie swims the butterfly, while Kallyn will compete in the backstroke.

This year’s sophomore class includes Michele Lewis (Norwell, Mass.), Morgan Parker (Keene, N.H.) and Rose Poney (Winooski, Vt.).

Colby-Sawyer College Athletic Facilities The Dan and Kathleen Hogan Sports Center is the heart of indoor athletics and fitness on campus. The 63,000-square-foot facility features a competition-size swimming pool (Knight Natatorium), field house with basketball and volleyball courts, an aerobics room, and racquetball, squash, walleyball and handball courts.

There is also a fully equipped fitness center for team use, for individual athletes and for students’ personal fitness. Mercer Hall, which recently underwent a full renovation, houses the Ray Indoor Climbing Wall, as well as a human performance laboratory that provides computerized health and fitness assessments. Dedicated in October of 1999, the Kelsey Athletic Fields are some of New England’s finest. Featuring a 120 x 80 yard soccer field, a multipurpose field and a baseball field, the surfaces and views are unparalleled. The soccer field features newly added bleachers with seating for 300 spectators to sit and cheer on the Chargers.

Also included in the outdoor athletic facilities are the Kelsey Tennis Courts, recently refinished in U.S. Open blue, and Mercer Field, another home to Colby-Sawyer’s soccer and lacrosse programs.
