2018 GAME NOTES

QUICK RECAP Colorado Mesa suffered their first loss of the season last Saturday against Chadron State at Stocker Stadium. The 38-34 setback came with after a late Eagle score and a last second interception in the endzone that ended the Maverick threat. Chadron State stacked up 645 yards of total offense to the Mavericks 483 yards with a season-low 131 coming on the ground.

Mavericks Honor Roll

NYIKOS CUP This weekend’s Nyikos Cup matchup will be the ninth time the Colorado Mesa Mavericks and the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers square off for the cup named after longtime faculty member and supporter of both schools, Dr. Michael Nyikos. The Orediggers won the first five meetings in the Cup Series while the Mavericks have won the past three matchups. The Mavericks won last season’s matchup 38-36 after Ryan Sheehan kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired. 300 YARD GAME Quarterback Eystin Salum did something on Saturday that he had never done in his Maverick career. The Denver native passed for over 300-yards for the first time in the loss to Chadron State. He was 22-of-35 for 352 yards and three touchdowns. His previous high was last season when he threw for 299 yards against New Mexico Highlands on 9-for-12 passing. ANDERSON’S BIG DAY Junior wideout Peter Anderson had one of the best days as a receiver in a Colorado Mesa uniform last Saturday against Chadron State. The speedster caught 11 passes for a career-high 266 yards and two scores. His first catch came on the first play from scrimmage, a 75-yard touchdown catch giving the Mavericks an early lead. GROUNDING THE OREDIGGERS One of the keys to the game will be trying to slow down the Oredigger offense. They have the leading rusher in the conference in Cameron Mayberry (564 yards, 3rd Nationally) and the RMAC’s leading receiver in Brody Oliver (539 yards, 3rd Nationally). The Orediggers rank 12th nationally in total offense per game at 489.5 yards per game. BOOTS One of things that may be getting lost in this season so far has been the play of true freshman placekicker Lucas Ruiz Diaz. The Montrose native is a perfect 15-for-15 on his point after attempts and 5-for-7 on field goal chances with a log of 43 yards.
