Combining to Score with Overlapping Runs
Teach the players how to unbalance the defense or defender to get an opportunity to finish on goal. Teach the players when an overlap is "on" and when it is not. Show overlaps to inside and outside of field. How and when to call for a leave or dummy, and how to execute properly. Keep all movement crisp & with purpose. Show how runs into play clear defenders and open space for overlapping runs.
I. WARM UP DURATION
ACTIVITY: 15 Min
INTENSITY # OF REPETITIONS
2v1 Combination with Overlap to Goal Medium 15 per player
ACTIVITY TIME
15 seconds
RECOVERY TIME
30 Seconds
ORGANIZATION (PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/EQUIPMENT/PLAYERS) 3 teams of 4 or 5, GK in goal. 1 team provides defender. Team of 2 play ball to start sequence, defender presses to win ball, and player overlaps, receiving pass finishing with shot on goal. Rotate all teams to defensive team.
COACHING POINTS/ KEY CONCEPTS:
Defenders need to close fast and try to win ball 100%. Timing of overlap run. Run should go wide and then bend back towards goal. First touch finishes, or 1st touch towards middle og goal. Timing and weight of passes. Angle of penetrating passes. Quality finishes.
II. SMALL SIDED DURATION
ACTIVITY: 25 Minutes
INTENSITY # OF REPETITIONS
3rd Man Overlap & Dummy Option Medium 20 per player
ACTIVITY TIME
15 Seconds
RECOVERY TIME
30 Seconds
ORGANIZATION (PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/EQUIPMENT/PLAYERS) One team is combining middle players. 2 players check into middle to combine for overlapping option or dummy leave. Combining players continue runs to opposite sides. Rotate all teams to checking/combining players.
COACHING POINTS/ KEY CONCEPTS: Timing and angles of all runs. Communication to call for ball and let players know what the plan is. Timing and quality of combining players runs to clear space for overlapping players. Call for a dummy only if that is a better option, determined by the position of players and pace of the pass.
III. EXPANDED SMALL SIDED ACTIVITY: DURATION
20 Minutes
INTENSITY # OF REPETITIONS
6v6 Overlap to Attack High 4
ACTIVITY TIME
4 Minutes
RECOVERY TIME
1 Minute
ORGANIZATION (PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/EQUIPMENT/PLAYERS) Play directional to goals, where team must combine in middle zone and complete overlap to score. Can "lock" 2 players/team in zone or allow players to check in for combination. Middle zone can be free of pressure or 100% game pressure.
COACHING POINTS/ KEY CONCEPTS:
When to combine and overlap and when to possess the ball and move/maniputate the defense to create space to score. Communication to tell teammates the "plan". Runs to clear space and drag defenders out of shape. Timing of runs, quality and angles of passes - both in combination and penetration.
IV. GAME
ACTIVITY: DURATION
30 Minutes
INTENSITY # OF REPETITIONS
6v6 or 9v9 High 3
ACTIVITY TIME
8 Minutes
RECOVERY TIME
2 Minutes
ORGANIZATION (PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/EQUIPMENT/PLAYERS) Divide players into 2 teams and play to big goals, where the team in possession must overlap before they can score. Then, remove all restrictions and play normal soccer.
COACHING POINTS/ KEY CONCEPTS: Recognize when the overlap is "on". Overlapping on the outside AND inside of the field. Movements of all players in combination and clearing of space. Communcation of players demanding ball. Can the players find an opportunity for a Dummy/Leave play?

TOPIC Combining with Overlaping Runs NOTATE PRINCIPLES OF PLAY AND/OR PLAYER ROLES AND/OR TACTICS THAT ARE INVOLVED IN THE SESSION: PRINCIPLES OF DEFENSE 1. PRESSURE 2. DELAY 3. DEPTH 4. BALANCE 5. COMPACTNESS 6. CONTROL & RESTRAINT 7. COUNTERATTACK
PRINCIPLES OF ATTACK 1. PENETRATION 2. SUPPORT & DEPTH 3. MOBILITY 4. WIDTH 5. IMPROVISATION
DEFENSIVE ROLES 1. PRESSURE 2. COVER 3. BALANCE 4. COMPACTNESS
ATTACKING ROLES TACTICS - ACCESSING SAFETY VS. RISK 1. PLAYER ON THE BALL ATTACKING 1/3 - MOVE - RECEIVE - FINISH 2. SUPPORTING PLAYER(S) MIDDLE 1/3 - BUILD - CONNECT - SUPPORT 3. PLAYER(S) AWAY FROM BALL DEFENSIVE 1/3 - DENY - DESTROY - DEVELOP
QUESTIONS TO ANSWER IN THE SESSION: WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, & HOW? When & Where whould we overlap? How do making runs clear space for the overlapping player to penetrate? Why do we need to change speeds when making runs? What players are involved in the different combinations? Why do we call for a leave or dummy? Do players have to leave the ball?
VISUAL CUES TO TRIGGER PLAYER RESPONSE: An overlap is "on" when there is open space behind the defense. A Dummy/Leave call is a viable option ONLY IF you are in a better position than the next player in the combination. Look for an overlap opportunity to the opposite side of the player on the ball's direction of his 1st touch. If a defender is froze and committed to the dribbling player, an overlapping run is "on" as a viable option to penetrate the defense.
SESSION NOTES FROM THE COACH: Activity I: All movements, runs, passes, should be 100% at game speed. Defenders should try to win ball and stop shots, so players train with realistic timing. The timing, movements of players, and angle of passes are the key finer points to hone in. Older players and more technically sound players can understand why more than younger players. But younger players can certainly understand how and when to exploit space. If defenders cheat the pass, encourage players to not pass and instead dribble to goal. Players MUST DRIVE off the dribble at the defense to make them commit, and that create the time the overlapping player needs.
Activity II: It is critical for the combining players to continue their runs and clear space for the overlap to occur. Watch for players to "ball watch" or watch their passes, and correct immediately. One touch play is desired for speed of play, but 2 touch is also fine. Overlapping players will need to watch the play develop, including the quality of touches of the combining players, in order to time their runs correctly. Introduce and explain the leave/dummy call after they have a concept and success rate of all the timing. Allow the players to decide how to start the play (which middle player to play to 1st) , determining who get's the overlap or who get's the dummy call. Only allow the dummy to be called if that player is in a better position to get a better opportunity for a quality chance on goal. Combinations need to occur in the middle of the field so we have space to run into, therfore combining players need to check in quickly at speed.
Activity III: This activity will likely need to be manipulated to suit your team's age and abilities. Manipute the game so that your teams have success under the appropriate amount of pressure. Coach the overlapping players to recognize the moment when to begin the overlapping run and when to remain in support for possession.
Activity IV: It's still just soccer. Now, make the players play possession soccer and look for the opportunity to overlap, not force one every time that their team has the ball. Look for opportunities for a player to call for a leave/dummy as the game is played. Most players will want to overlap on the outside of the field, where often there is the most space - but make sure they also know they can overlap to the inside of the field - this is often the more dangerous run or play, especially if the player on the ball can drive at the center backs and freeze them to commit to the dribble, opening up the back line directly in front of goal.
