Dear students, parents and caregivers, He kura ao, He ao kura ko Turanga Wahine. Nga mihi aroha ki nga kaitiaki a o tatou rangatira.
Term Four has begun with the sunshine of summer making for a warm and enjoyable school experience. We had our first prizegiving last week with our Young Achiever’s Assembly. This assembly is where we acknowledge those students who have achieved highly in academic, sports and cultural endeavours as well as those who have given service to our school. It is always so pleasing to hand out certificates to those students who have given back to the school as part of a student council or in their given sport or cultural activity. There are many opportunities for students to contribute and participate in school activities and I encourage all students to get involved next year. Student leadership and engagement has the power to make our school truly responsive to the needs of our students.

All teachers are working towards these exams and are always willing to offer extra assistance and revision activities for all students who request it. In addition, teachers are available to help students who still need to gain some more credits to complete their qualification. I encourage all student to take these opportunities offered.

Whew! That does sound very busy. Junior students can also look forward to some great activities after all this assessment. We have the Junior Sports Tournament with other Gisborne and Coast schools and then we have End Of Year Activities involving camps for Year 10 and a mix of activities for Year 9s. These occur in the penultimate week of the school year and are always great events to round off the year. Finally we would like to welcome Victoria West, our new Assistant Principal, to our school community and whanau.

DANCE -Last night saw the return of one of my dance idols-Lana Phillips- to perform with her colleagues from Footnote Dance in her hometown. Watching Lana perform was so inspiring, she caught everyone’s eye! Seeing how hard she must work and how much potential and pride she puts into her dancing really showed what you can achieve. Last night they performed 7 dances which were all unique and different from what we would usually see. We felt very privileged to have Footnote come to Gisborne considering Lana came to Gisborne Girls’ High School and danced with us at Nadine Antoinette School of Dance. It was awesome to see everyone’s support and hopefully next year they will return with new interpretations of Contemporary Dance . Alice Jenkins.

Girls’ High Hydraulink Senior A Netball Team - Report on our year.
Students out and about for Careers, STAR course and Gateway.
We are very proud to have captained the team this year. Though we had a few ups and downs at the start of our season, we ended our Gisborne Netball season placed 5th overall in the Premier Grade. We travelled to Rotorua for the Waikato BOP Secondary School Tournament held on Sunday 2 August. This gave us an opportunity to play against other school teams before heading to the Lower North Island Secondary School Netball Competition. We played well through the round robin section but after extra time in the knockout round, we lost by 2. It was a good performance by the girls. Girls’ High Hydraulink Netball Team travelled to Palmerston North Saturday 29 August 2015 to compete at the Lower North Island Secondary School Tournament. We were placed 25th from last year’s results and with only 4 original players from last year’s team it was a new, younger looking team and for some, it was their first experience of Secondary School competition. We would like to thank O’Neill Wilson, Raiha Malcolm and Alex Bermingham who joined the team for the tournament. There was a mixture of weather that the girls were not used to, as we had played our whole netball season indoors. This year we coped well with the weather thanks to the repairs on our school gym, which meant all our training was outside at the netball courts, so playing outdoors was not a problem for us this year. We played 9 games with no wins on Monday, 2 wins Tuesday, a win and a loss on Wednesday, 2 wins on Thursday and a loss on Friday placing us 20th overall. A great effort from the girls moving up the rank by 5 places. We were so excited by our achievement. We were unsure of what the competition was going to be like, but we were really impressed by the spirit showed by our team. The team was happy on and off the courts, the team worked well together, and had a lot of fun at Bowlarama and Flip City, going over to watch the basketball competition when we had time, and when we went out to dinner at Gengys on Wednesday night. Best tournament to date and well planned and organised by our Team Manager Dianah Foley. It’s the last year of High School Netball for Jordan Cribb, Ashleigh Brown-Smith and Te Kahu Peters. We had a great bunch of girls in our team this year, thanks also Sulieti Halafihi, Ladeen Haerewa, Jordyn Broughton, Aroha Brown-McLaren, Paruhi Peters and Lucretia Taitapanui. Big huge thanks to Hugh Spence from Hydraulink for the sponsorship this year. We are really grateful for all the support you have given to Girls’ High Netball and especially to the Girls’ High A team. Special thanks to our Coach Elaine Lamont for her time and dedication this year. Thanks also to Aunty Diny, who managed the team, organised all our fundraising and made sure we had what we needed and more. Thank you to Miss Hill who came to LNISS as our teacher in charge. For future, girls who would like to strive towards representing the school at this level or higher, we as a team recognise the importance of fitness. The games we lost were to teams that were fitter, faster and more accurate than we were. Don’t sit idle over the summer, motivate yourself, work on your fitness, and let your coaches work on your skill. Thank you Girls’ High Netball, I have thoroughly enjoyed playing netball for the five years of High School and good luck to the team for 2016. .Jordan Cribb, Co Captain with Ashleigh Brown Smith 2015.
