MULTI-‐SPORT  ATHLETE  POLICY  AT  OBERLIN  COLLEGE     In  the  spirit  of  Division  III  athletics,  student-‐athletes  do  and  may  participate  in  multiple   sports  throughout  the  school  year.  Oberlin  College  encourages  student-‐athletes  to  play   more  than  one  sport.  Student-‐athletes  and  head  coaches  from  all  sports  involved  will   work  together  to  make  intercollegiate  athletics  a  positive  experience  for  the  athlete   without  compromising  team  goals.  If  the  head  coaches  and  student-‐athlete  cannot   come  to  a  mutually  agreeable  plan  regarding  in  and  out  of  season  participation,  the   following  policy  will  serve  as  the  default:     •  In-‐season  sport  has  priority  until  the  completion  of  that  season.       •  The  athlete  is  permitted  one  week  off  between  seasons.  If  the  student-‐athlete  decides   not  to  use  this,  it  is  their  choice,  not  the  choice  of  the  head  coach.       •  The  student-‐athlete’s  safety  comes  first.  Consultation  with  the  sports  medicine  staff   may  be  appropriate  to  ensure  the  student-‐athlete  is  training  appropriately  for  the  in-‐   season  sport.       •  Approval  is  necessary  by  the  in-‐season  head  coach  for  the  student-‐athlete  to   participate  in  any  non-‐traditional  season  activity.       •  If  a  student-‐athlete  wants  to  play  a  second  sport  for  which  he/she  was  not  recruited,   the  student-‐athlete  should  talk  with  the  primary  sport  head  coach  first.  After  this   conversation,  the  head  coach  of  each  sport  should  confirm  expectations  regarding  in   and  out-‐of-‐season  participation.     •  If  the  athlete  is  going  to  participate  in  non-‐traditional  season  practices,  he/she  still   needs  to  have  at  least  one  day  off  from  Oberlin  athletics  per  week.     •  The  athlete  may  not  miss  an  in-‐season  practice  for  a  non-‐traditional  season  practice   unless  the  in-‐season  head  coach  has  approved  this  beforehand.     •  If  a  student-‐athlete  was  recruited  for  two  (or  more)  sports,  he/she  should  be   committed  to  playing  both/all  sports.  A  head  coach  cannot  encourage  the  student-‐ athlete  to  pick  one  sport  over  another.  There  must  be  open  communication  between   the  student-‐  athlete’s  head  coaches  during  each  season  of  participation.
