Connecting Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing Through Literacy and Technology March 6, 2012 Pittsburgh PaTTAN (9:00 am-3:30 pm) March 7, 2012 Harrisburg PaTTAN (9:00 am-3:30 pm) March 9, 2012 King of Prussia PaTTAN (9:00 am-3:30-pm) Participants will explore Web 2.0 tools to support instruction in literacy, and will develop and practice skills with multimedia tools (including but not limited to: Animoto, One True Media, Voice Thread) in order to facilitate implementation with students. Since interaction among other students with hearing loss can be challenging due to the nature of a low incidence population, location and/or distances, participants will investigate these Web 2.0 tools as a means to promote collaboration between students regardless of setting. Participants will be expected to share individual or class work at a later date in a statewide collaborative literacy project for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Prior participation in literacy workshops is not required. Participants are asked not to bring laptops, as pre-programmed equipment will be provided. Individuals attending this event must arrive on time and stay the duration of the event to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions must be brought to the attention of the individual’s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the event. [5] Act 48 hours are offered for each event.

Presenters: PaTTAN Educational Consultants: Jane Freeman, M. Ed.; Sue Ann Houser, M.A.; Marlene Schechter, M.Ed. The presenters have many years of direct classroom experience in teaching deaf or hard of hearing students, and will incorporate their background knowledge into the technology implementation.

Objectives: The participant will be able to:  Explore research based technology tools that promote literacy  Practice using Web 2.0 tools to support literacy  Discover the relevance of technology applications with student IEP goals  Consider participation in a statewide collaboration project utilizing Web 2.0 tools
