Psalms Sermon Series Supports Session 7: God Revealed Sermon Title: God Doesn’t Play Hide And Seek Passage: Psalm 19:1-14

Connection to Passage Is God knowable? David identified two ways that God revealed Himself. First, creation testifies to God’s greatness and nature. Second, the written Word reveals intimate truths about God’s heart, mind, and hand. Both forms of revelation are imperative to knowing God personally. Introduction/Opening How many of you grew up playing hide-and-seek? The game is popular with children. Some people view God as unknowable. The truth is God isn’t playing hide-and-seek with you and me. David acknowledged that God is knowable because He intentionally reveals Himself. As you and I look into the sky, into the Scriptures, and into the lives of His servants, we see God in all His glory, majesty, and splendor. Let’s thank God that He is approachable, knowable, and relational. Outline I. See God’s Witness in His Sky (Ps. 19:1-6) I remember camping at Yosemite National Park. Early one morning I stepped outside the tent and looked up into the sky. My heart erupted in worship. Creation testified to God’s glory. I fixed my eyes on the sky and thanked God that He knew each star by name (Ps. 147:4). I didn’t worship the creation that early California morning. My heart rejoiced in the Creator (Ex. 20:3-4). a. People are without excuse (Rom. 1:20). i. Creation is a visible witness (Ps. 19:1). ii. Creation is a constant witness (Ps. 19:2). iii. Creation is a global witness (Ps. 19:3-4). iv. Creation is a personal witness (Ps. 19:5-6). b. Creation testifies about God (Ps. 19:1). i. God is glorious (Ps. 19:1a). ii. God is involved (Ps. 19:1b). iii. God is knowable (Ps. 19:2-7). II. Share God’s Witness in His Scriptures (Ps. 19:7-12) God’s Word is inspired, inerrant, infallible, and authoritative. The Scriptures are nourishment for the believer’s soul. The Bible isn’t meant to be placed on a bookshelf or coffee table to collect dust. God’s Word is to be read, studied, memorized, meditated on, applied, and lived out. The divine design of Bible study is transformation, not information. David gave a powerful message about the importance of God’s Word in the walk, witness, and worship of God’s people. God is knowable because He revealed Himself in the Scriptures.

a. The Bible is perfect (Ps. 19:7a). i. The Word is from God (2 Tim. 3:16). ii. The Word is alive (Heb. 4:12). b. The Bible is personal (Ps. 19:7-12). i. God’s Word revives (Ps. 19:7a). ii. God’s Word teaches (Ps. 19:7b). iii. God’s Word uplifts (Ps. 19:8a). iv. God’s Word guides (Ps. 19:8b). v. God’s Word endures (Ps. 19:9a). vi. God’s Word satisfies (Ps. 19:10). vii. God’s Word protects (Ps. 19:11-12). III. Study God’s Witness in His Servants (Ps. 19:13-14) The missional mandate of every local church is to make disciples (Matt. 28:19-20). Jesus calls His people to teach new believers “to observe everything I have commanded you.” We make disciples by teaching the Scriptures, and we develop disciples by studying the words and actions of God’s servants. a. A servant’s behavior matters (Ps. 19:13). i. The desire to live obediently (Ps. 19:13a). ii. The prayer to live free (Ps. 19:13b). b. A servant’s heart magnifies (Ps. 19:14). i. A servant’s petition (Ps. 19:14a). ii. A servant’s position (Ps. 19:14b). Conclusion On a clear night, walk outside and look up into the sky and see God’s glory. On a daily basis, open the pages of Scripture and look into God’s face. As a discipleship process, establish two or three healthy, same-gender Christian relationships and deepen your walk with God. As you look up into the sky, read the Scriptures, and relate with God’s servants, you’ll discover that God doesn’t play games, especially hide-and-seek. He goes to great lengths to reveal Himself.
