1 Corinthians Sermon Series Supports Session 8: Understanding Love Sermon Title: God’s Plan for Purity Passage: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Connection to the passage Christians should be motivated by God’s love. How we live before God and people communicates the quality of our love. If we truly love God, then we will strive to live a pure life in the midst of a fallen world. Introduction/Opening Every city has an identity, something for which it is known such as a style of art, a sports tradition, a type of food, and an attitude. Not all cities are known for their sophistication and refinement. Ancient Corinth was known for its immorality and permissive culture. Paul confronted the Corinthian believer’s attitude towards sexual immorality and commanded them to live a pure life. The most important reason for purity is realizing that our bodies no longer belong to us. Our bodies belong to the Lord because He bought us through His sacrificial death. Since our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit, we should develop a plan for purity by correcting our excuses, confronting ignorance, choosing to follow God’s commands, and contemplating the reasons why purity is important. Outline 1. Correct your excuses (1 Cor. 6:12-13) a) Immorality is not good for us. b) Immorality leads to destruction. c) Our bodies are to be used by our Creator. 2. Confront ignorance (1 Cor. 6:14-17) a) Our Lord will one day raise our body. b) Our bodies are members of Christ. 3. Choose to follow God’s commands (1 Cor. 6:18-19) a) Flee from sexual immorality. b) Do not grieve the Holy Spirit. c) We belong to the Lord. 4. Contemplate the reasons why purity is important (1 Cor. 6:20) a) Consider the price Jesus paid for our redemption. b) Consider how we can honor God with our bodies. c) Consider the consequences if we do not live a pure life.

Conclusion We cannot afford to be careless about our purity. We need to develop a plan for purity so that we are prepared when temptation comes our way. The call is for believers to realize that their bodies no longer belong to themselves. For this reason, we should yield our bodies to the Lord’s service and honor Him.
