1 Corinthians Sermon Series Supports Session 3: Keeping Commitments Sermon Title: Beware of Arrogance Passage: 1 Corinthians 3:21-4:21

Connection to the passage God expects believers to honor their commitments. In the future, we will stand before God and be accountable to Him. At that time, the truth of our lives will be evaluated. Introduction/Opening On the corner of most paintings we find the signature of the painter. Some may see adding a signature as an arrogant act, while others realize that the signature serves as a means to authenticate the work displayed on the canvas. Paul shifted the focus from men to God. People have no grounds before God for boasting. The future judgment that we will all experience before God prompts us to live humble, obedient lives. In order to be prepared for the coming future judgment, we need to: accept the truth about ourselves, expect to give an account to God, and inspect our attitude. Outline 1. Accept the truth about ourselves (1 Cor. 3:21-4:1) a) As believers, we are blessed with all things. Therefore, we do not boast because all that we have is because of God. b) As servants, we are entrusted with responsibilities. We do not boast because we will one day give an account. 2. Expect to give an account to God (1 Cor. 4:2-5) a) The Lord will judge our actions. b) The Lord will expose our motives. 3. Inspect our attitude (1 Cor. 4:6-21) a) Do not compare yourself with others. b) Do not be arrogant. Conclusion We need to beware of arrogance and maintain faithfulness to the Lord. One day, we will stand before Him in judgment. If we inspect our attitude and actions, then we can be prepared for that future experience. The call is to evaluate ourselves and respond to God’s Word while we still have an opportunity. Corey Meggs is the Senior Pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Somerset, Kentucky.
