Saturday, August 23, 2014 Cecilia Quad • Oceanview Campus Convocation represents the critical first step in new students’
orientation to Marymount California University. Generally defined, “convocation” is an assembly of members of a society or community. More specifically, Marymount’s Convocation is an assembly of members of its community for the purpose of welcoming, recognizing, and celebrating its new entering class.
Convocation is a formal ceremony during which the university
faculty and staff welcome incoming students who are officially inducted into the Marymount community.
The induction ceremony includes a welcoming address
by the President of the University, a faculty member and a representative of the student body. During the ceremony, students will come forward to be greeted by the President, the Provost and the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and receive a symbolic gift. Students then sign their name on a book, signifying their incorporation into the Marymount California University community of learners.
The primary purpose of Convocation is to serve as a “rite
of passage,” a ritual that affirms and enhances new students’ assimilation into the community. Convocation reinforces the students’ identification with the institution and provides the students with a strong sense of personal significance.
