Digital Photography Family Boat Building Weekend LCMM Staff Spend a 3-day weekend with family members or friends building, finishing and launching a 12’ Bevin’s Rowing Skiff. This traditional designed boat kit from the Alexandria Seaport Foundation is nailed construction, not stitch and glue. Participants will need to provide some basic tools (a list will be provided). BLACKSMITHING Basic Blacksmithing Workshops Peter Wells Open to students with no previous metalworking experience, these workshops cover basic iron working skills including coal forge management, tools and materials of the trade and basic forging techniques. Though the emphasis is on technique, students may expect to complete several projects during the workshop. The two day workshop covers basic skills; the three day workshops adds more detail and time for practice. Introduction to Traditional Door Hardware Lucian Avery This 2 day workshop will focus on using traditional forging techniques to make early American styled door hardware. Brian Anderson Brian Anderson offers an advanced projects workshop for students with previous blacksmithing experience. Enhance your design and forgery skills. Submit a design concept in advance and work with Brian on developing your idea from concept to finished work. Emphasis will be on traditional joinery and forging skills. Limited to 4 students. Joanne DellaSalla, Matthew Witten Come paddle back in time and visit an ancient Native American village near the confluence of Dead Creek and Otter Creek – an area that was at one time one of the most prized and active Native American campsites and settlements in all of Vermont. We will canoe a short distance on Otter Creek (known to early European settlers as “The Indian Road”), explore the marshes of Dead Creek, and take out at a spot that shows ample evidence of Native American habitation. Archaeologist Joanne DellaSalla will show and explain chert and quartzite artifacts, and give a stone tool-making demonstration using techniques that date to thousands of years ago. Ecologist Matthew Witten will lead a seine-netting activity in which participants help to catch, handle, examine, and identify the numerous fish species that led Native Americans here. Forging Sculpture - An Imaginative Approach to Blacksmithing with Lynn Newcomb Exercise your artistic and forging skills in this 2 day workshop with blacksmith/sculptor Lynn Newcomb. Students will use blacksmithing techniques to create a forged steel wall relief. Day one will be spent in layout/design and forging a frame to incorporate the relief elements. Stock elements will be pre-cut but students will have wide choices on how to utilize these elements in their design as well as choices regarding joinery. A Day at the Forge Peter Wells Have you ever wondered what it is like to stand at a blacksmiths forge and hammer a piece of red hot steel into a useful or decorative shape? Here is your chance to find out! This workshop is introductory and does not cover all the details of our longer sessions. However, it will provide a day of history, demonstrations of tools and techniques, examples of antique blacksmiths work, and a fun opportunity for plenty of hands-on participation. With a little perseverance, you will go home with an iron artifact wrought by your own hand. Open to anyone, no metalworking experience required. Limited to 8 students. OTHER COURSES Lake Champlain Rowing Adventure Matt Witten, Kerry Batdorf Participants in this exciting and rewarding summer boating and camping experience (for youth ages 12-17) will embark on two of the Museum’s open pilot rowing gigs. Offered jointly by the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum and the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center, the program takes place in the Split Rock – Button Bay area of the lake, which is both strikingly beautiful and also rich in natural and cultural history. The Lake Champlain Rowing Adventure offers young people an opportunity to exercise their selfsufficiency while also collaborating in a group; it deepens their sense of place in this unique ecosystem. Rowing is challenging and rigorous work, and is interspersed with plenty of time to enjoy the water, form friendships, and explore the lake and its environs through activities such as seine-net fishing and identification, snorkeling, and hiking. Rope Braiding and Design Robert Dollar This course will introduce you to the basic techniques of rope braiding. You will learn to braid an ocean plait designed mat using 1/2” or 3/8” manila rope. You will learn how to stitch and finish the mat. Other designs and techniques will be discussed. Your mat will be ideal for your front entrance or steps.
