We are con=nuously thankful for the connec=ons we have made between our dioceses over these past few years. BE IT RESOLVED, that this 106 th Annual Conven=on of the Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania takes note of the 40th anniversary of the ordina=on of women in The Episcopal Church and of the ordina=on of The Rev. Dr. Barbara Akin to the priesthood on October 5, 1985, the first woman to be ordained and to serve in our diocese. We give thanks for this expansion and enrichment of ministry and for those like Dr. Akin who responded to God’s call in a =me of challenging discernment.
BE IT RESOLVED, that this 106 th Annual Conven=on of the Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania takes note of the re=rement of Gladys Shultz as Organist at Emmanuel Church, Emporium following 70 years of service, which represents nearly half of the 150-year history of the congrega=on. We honor her faithfulness in assis=ng the people of Emmanuel in the worship of God and pray that the joy she has provided may be deeply rooted in her own heart in the days ahead.
BE IT RESOLVED, that this 106 th Annual Conven=on of the Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania takes note of the re=rement from ac=ve ministry of the Rev. Victor J. Kinnunen. In the course of a busy and faithful voca=on as an APorney, Vic responded to the call to ordained ministry and was ordained to the Diaconate on October 16, 1983 and to the Priesthood on September 8, 1990. While con=nuing in his legal profession, Fr. Vic served as an interim or part =me priest in several congrega=ons within the diocese, including Titusville, Lake City, Corry, Youngsville, Bradford, DuBois, Warren, Meadville, Oil City, and Franklin.
He brought hope and encouragement to the many congrega=ons he served with aPen=veness and commitment. His faithfulness extended to ac=ve par=cipa=on in the community and councils of the diocese. Fr. Vic’s impression will remain throughout the diocese as he moves on to a new phase of life and ministry. May God grant him many happy years!
BE IT RESOLVED, that this Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania, gathered in Warren, Pennsylvania for its One Hundred and Sixth Conven=on on November 5, 2016 remembers with gra=tude the life and witness of the following servants of God:
Enid M. Blewe, Bishop died January 1, 2016. She was born in Erie on October 4, 1933 and lived and worked in Erie all her life. She was bap=zed at St. Mark’s, married at the Cathedral of St. Paul, and was an ac=ve member and leader of St. Mary’s, Lawrence Park for over 50 years, with a ministry which extended to the diocese and the wider Episcopal Church.
Enid was a member of the Standing CommiPee and Diocesan Council, United Thank Offering Coordinator, and past president of the Diocesan Episcopal Church Women. She was instrumental in developing Episcopal Community Services, which for many years provided food, clothing, and funds to the needy, worship services for the community, and story =me for children in Erie’s lower eastside. In 1976, she made the 2nd Cursillo held in the Episcopal Diocese of NWPA and went on to serve as a Cursillo team leader many =mes.
A long-term volunteer at Brevillier Village, Enid was a member of the Board of Directors of Conrad House and was involved in planning the new St. Barnabas Chapel at Brevillier. She was ac=ve in the ECW at provincial and na=onal levels, represen=ng the diocese several =mes at the Women’s Triennial. In 2010, she was the recipient of the Bishop's Cross.
In addi=on to her many church ac=vi=es, Enid enjoyed spending =me with her family, aPending performances at the Erie Playhouse, swimming, playing cards and dominos with her friends, and aPending the Erie Seawolves games. She was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Donald who was himself an ac=ve leader at St. Mary’s and in the diocese. She is s u r v i v e d b y f o u r c h i l d r e n a n d e i g h t grandchildren. Enid Bishop was the very model of an Episcopal Church Woman for her genera=on, “faithful, and brave, and true.”
The Rev. Julie Fleming Nelson died on July 29, 2016 in Falmouth, MassachusePs. She was born on October 13, 1931 in Ambler, Pennsylvania. At age six, she moved to New York City which was her home for the next 43 years. For ten of those years, she worked with the Interna=onal Execu=ve Services Corps, a nonprofit providing consul=ng services to businesses in developing na=ons. She graduated from Columbia University in 1972. She married Arthur Nelson in 1968.
Following Art’s death in 1989, Julie responded to a call to ordina=on, gradua=ng from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1994. She was ordained to the priesthood at Holy Cross, North East where she served for six years. Her wider diocesan service included the Diocesan Council and Commission on Ministry. In 2002, she re=red to Falmouth and con=nued to serve congrega=ons in the Cape Cod area.
Julie was an avid traveler which took her around the country and the world. She was a pet lover and an accomplished bird watcher. She was sharp wiPed and outspoken with a generous and loving heart.
The Conven=on directs the Secretary to appropriately communicate the ac=ons of this resolu=on to the principal survivors and stands in a moment of silence to commend to God’s mercy this person and all other members and friends of our diocese who have died since our last conven=on.
Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord; And let light perpetual shine upon them. May their souls, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
