COYOTE STUDENT-ATHLETE SUCCESS

MENS SOCCER TEAM

2017 / 2018 COYOTE ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB

CSN Athletics had many exceptional individual and team performances in 2016-2017 including NJCAA national championship tournament appearances from our men’s soccer and baseball teams. Here’s a snapshot of program successes over the last year. The Lady Coyote volleyball program has grown immensely in just two short years. After an inaugural 2015 season where they went just 2-26 overall, the team was able to finish with a 10-18 record overall. This conference-leading turnaround resulted in the 2016 Scenic West Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors for coach Sue Thurman. In addition, sophomore Johanna Alvarez-Thompson was an All-Region 18 first team regular season and tournament honoree while Christina Beavers’ stellar play earned her a spot on the All-Region 18 second team. The Lady Coyote soccer team finished an extremely successful firstyear campaign with a 9-9-1 overall record. Several Lady Coyotes were rewarded for outstanding individual accomplishments including sophomore Nadia Hernandez earning SWAC Player of the Year honors while she and Carolina Velasquez earned first team All-SWAC honors. In its inaugural year, the men’s soccer team reached historic heights. Following a season opening draw, the Coyotes reeled off eight straight match victories on the way to an impressive 15-3-2 regular season record, including 9-0-1 mark at home. This young team captured the Region 18 Tournament title, were runner up in the Western District Tournament and qualified for the chance to compete in the 2016 NJCAA National Tournament. Freshman goalkeeper Miguel Navarrete’s exceptional season was rewarded with All-Region 18 first team, Goalkeeper of the Year and tournament Most Valuable Player honors. Stefan Skrinjaric and Genaro Corona made the All-Region 18 first team while Conor Malone earned an All-Region 18 honorable mention and Eddie Martinez landed on the Region 18 All-Tournament team. The Lady Coyote softball program went from a last place finish in 2016 to a third-place finish in 2017 with a record of 25-24. January 27, 2017 was a significant day in the history of the program as the stunning Lady Coyote Softball Field opened, marking the first time the program had a place to call its own after many years playing on a public field. All-Region 18 honors went to Chandie Perez, Kara Simpson, Jinger Meuir, Jordan Menke and Shonda Badayos. The Coyote baseball team started the season with a 4-7 record and ended on an epic run that landed them in the NJCAA College World Series. While their world series appearance was brief, their magnificent run earned them the regular season SWAC Championship and both the Region 18 Tournament and the Western District Tournament Championships. 2017 SWAC Coach of the Year, Nick Garritano, will head into 2018 with several key players returning from this over-achieving team, including SWAC Player of the Year, Justin Lutes.
