The Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority has forged a new work rules agreement with the unions providing services at Cobo Center that will lower costs for exhibitors. The agreement, which covers all events at Cobo, provides more flexible work rules and better-defined policies for workdays and overtime, the authority said in a news release. It will make Cobo more competitive within the convention and meeting industry and help attract new business that will increase work and add jobs, CEO/CFO Patrick Bero said in the release.

"Everyone is on board that these changes will be critical to Cobo Center reaching its full potential as an economic engine for the region and the state," he said. With the new changes, exhibitors could save up to 33 percent on material handling labor, said Thom Connors, Cobo regional vice president for SMG and general manager for the center. For example, a small exhibitor with a 10 x 10 booth can now set up his canopy and hang signs by himself, saving money on those things. Or, if the exhibitor does call for help, he'll no longer incur a penalty if it's within 24 hours of when he needs the work done. Among other work rule changes, the agreement establishes straight-time pay for eight-hour periods between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., rather than having overtime kick in for any work taking place after 3 p.m. In addition to unions represented in the agreement, service contractors employing union staff for provision of exhibitor services during show set-up and take-down joined the discussions, the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority said.
