Sermon Study Guide “Tuning into Freedom’s Frequency” April 27-28, 2013 For individual, family or group study
Icebreaker
How would you define “freedom”?
Q&A
Do you ever sense God speaking to you? If so, in what way? Explain.
Read Out Loud (John 10:27) 1. 2.
Who are the “sheep” Jesus is referring to in verse 27? Explain. As His sheep, what is this verse saying about our ability to recognize God’s voice?
Talk It Over (1 Corinthians 2: 10-12) 1. 2. 3.
God reveals himself and his plans for us through His Spirit which dwells inside of us (verse 10). Is there anything we can do to create a “listening environment” to hear His Spirit? Pastor Cal told us that God’s favorite 2 topics to reveal to us are: Who He is. Who we are in light of who He is. Share a time when you sensed God speak to you about either of these. How do you discern the difference between God speaking and your own voice? Have you ever thought you heard from God and discovered you were wrong? Explain.
Work It Out
Are there any issues in your life currently in which you’d love some wisdom from God? Why not ask Him? (Try the following listening exercise.) Ask God to open your eyes spiritually and remove any hindrances. Think about this life issue and ask God for His direction. Be still and listen. (It’s usually the first thing that comes to mind.) Write it down and share with another person or in your small group.
Pray It Through Lord, I am so grateful for your Spirit. Help me to hear your voice more clearly. Please reveal to me more about who you are and who I am because of your son Jesus. Thank you for the freedom I get to experience because I am your beloved child and you love me. In Jesus Name, Amen
Personal Challenge Experiencing greater freedom in our lives involves exposing a lie we have believed that has kept us in spiritual bondage. In your quiet time this week, ask God to reveal any place in your life where you might be believing a lie. Confess it and claim your freedom in Christ. Then, ask God to replace that lie with His truth. (This can be done as many times as you feel God is leading you.)
DAILY READING & DEVOTIONS It’s natural to take notes on (and in) a deep, complex text like the Bible and to want to interact with the text yourself—to highlight, to question, to make observations. Looking back at our own notes, we can see how we’ve grown; we can follow the twists and turns of our spiritual journey. (excerpt from www.biblegateway.com)

It’s important to keep in mind that studying is a different exercise from reading. When you study something, you deeply invest your time and attention in what you’re reading. A text like the Bible will deeply reward that investment: you’ll learn more about ancient history and cultures, you’ll be exposed to challenging moral and philosophical concepts, and most significantly, you’ll come to understand more and more about the character of your Creator and His love for you. In that respect, you can expect to be changed by your study of the Bible. (excerpt from www.biblegateway.com)
For Devotional Study - “Paraphrase It” Read these verses individually several times. What is the timeless truth? Write the verse in your own words.
