He said: “You’d never look at a photograph for more than thirty seconds, unless there were a thousand faces and you were looking for your mother.” “Photography is all right, if you don’t mind looking at the world from the point of view of a paralyzed Cyclops-for a split second.” Post February 26, 1982: “David Hockney February 26, 1982, was gifted with a packet of Polaroid film by a prescient museum curator. 231 photocollages using both a Pentax 110 single lens reflex and a 35mm Nikon camera. During these years, Hockney experimented heavily with photocollage, creating works he calls joiners. He has made no large-scale photocollages since, it remains a major single body of work within his career. Hockney explores lines and edges in his photography. Artists at the very beginnings of photography in 1839 explored light. Hockney is a modern artist with modernist concerns. Whereas the first photographic artists were excited by the opportunity to explore light while retaining renaissance perspective, the modernist artist wanted to be free of renaissance perspective. Photo-collage adds a footnote to Cubism and to the Paragone, the age-old competition between artists for the supremacy of their media. In the Renaissance, sculptors claimed superiority over painters because a single work could depict a work in three dimensions. With Cubism, by contrast, Picasso could combine all the planes of fruit in a plate on a table, on a single pictural surface. Here Hockney manages to record the intricacies of a complex interior with all the excitement Cezanne raised painting a plate of peaches on a table, with a cacophony of photographs *Hockney’s Photocollages by Anne Hoy, published in David Hockney-A Retrospective LACMA/Abrams 1988 At auction, David Hockney’s photographs at a high price of $194,500., lags far behind prices realized for his paintings and some of his works on paper. His pool series on paper routinely sell well ($600,000.) while Hockney paintings at auction have soared ($7,992,500). Prices for important photographs seem almost ‘limitless’ – The high price being $4,338,500 set this past November. Hockney photo-collages are seriously undervalued. The ten highest priced photographs to date, sold at auction, some by ‘painters’ others by photographers are:
