DAWG BITES Official Newsletter of UW-Stevens Point Women’s Basketball

Feb., 2015

Pointers compete in D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas UWSP women’s basketball decided to take advantage of winter break and traveled to play in the D3hoops. com Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 2014 D3hoops.com Classic consisted of 14 men’s and women’s teams from across the country. It was the first ever trip to the classic for the Pointers. With this travel opportunity came some firsts for a few of the Pointers. For some it was there first time traveling on an airplane while for others it was the first time visiting the entertainment capital of the world. Even though there was plenty to offer for the average Las Vegas traveler the Pointers took the “business trip” mentality and tried to take advantage of playing two first time opponents for the Pointers women’s basketball program. The first day of competition matched the Pointers with the Occidental Tigers out of California. The Pointers won

56-43 behind senior Kaitlyn Jacobs’s third double-double of the season along with a dominating 56-28 advantage on the glass. On the second day of competition the Pointers were also matched up with a first time opponent for the program and defending National Champion FDU-Florham. The Devils entered the game on a 41 game winning streak and ranked #1 in the latest D3hoops. com poll. After pushing the topranked Devils to the final buzzer the Pointers eventually fell to the defending National Champs 60-58. The Pointers were once again led by senior Kaitlyn Jacob’s 18 points and 15 rebounds. With a combined 32 points and 25 rebounds over the two games Jacobs was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Even though the Pointers spent the majority of their time getting better on the court they took advantage of the limited free time to explore the historic strip of Las Vegas. For a sneak peak at what they saw please see the final page of the newsletter for our photo gallery.

Alumni Day A huge success On Jan. 17, 2014 the Pointers women’s basketball program welcomed back 30 alumni to participate in the Alumni Day Festivities. The day started out with some friendly competition in Berg Gym where the alumni were split into two teams to play in the annual alumni game. In front of a great crowd with Coach Egner giving the play-by-play the Pointers outlasted the Dawgs with a convincing 83-63 win.

Once the game ended and the post game stretching and icing concluded, the alumni were invited back for the FastBreak Club chalktalk with Coach Egner to get the game plan for the Pointers game against UW-River Falls and to also socialize with current FastBreak Club members. Once the game plan was set and the alumni were celebrated at halftime of the Pointers game in front of a great home crowd, the group headed to Hilltop Pub & Grill for a post-game social.

Last fall, the world first heard the story of 19-year-old Lauren Hill, a soon-tobe college freshman at Mount St. Joseph’s college in Cincinnati, Ohio. Diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an inoperable brain tumor, she stayed focused on making one of her dreams come true. She wanted to play her first collegiate basketball game for Mount St. Joseph. The game took place on Nov. 2, with MSJ playing rival Hiram College in front of a sold-out crowd of 10,250 at Xavier University’s Cintas Center. Since, Lauren has appeared in four of the team’s games while declining health forced her into home hospice care around the holidays. Through various fundraisers run in conjunction with the game and by Lauren Hill, over $1,000,000 has been raised for “The Cure Starts Now” fund. One such fundraiser was to auction off autographed #22 jerseys. UW-Stevens Point will hold a silent auction off its signed #22 jersey, the number worn by former National Player of the Year Sam Barber, starting Jan. 31 and ending on the Play4Kay day, Feb. 7. Look for the bidding sheet in the Berg Gym Lobby! See the whole Lauren Hill story here.
