Day Trips St. Patrick’s Day Parades By Katrina Innamorato Pull out your funky shamrock glasses, silly leprechaun hats, and get dressed up in green because March is the time of year where everyone bleeds Irish Pride. Soak up the IrishAmerican culture by participating in all of the fun activities associated with the day. Recognized in Ireland as a religious holiday, March 17 marks the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland responsible for converting the Irish from Paganism to Christianity. Most of us are familiar with the American traditions on St. Patrick’s Day, but the most prominent may be the St. Patrick’s Day parades that occur in the United States annually. The first parade was held in New York City in 1762. New York City happens to boast the title of hosting the world’s oldest and largest civilian parade in all of the United States with more than 2 million spectators and 150,000-250,000 participants. On this day, it is important not only to discover your, Irish Pride, but also to lavish in the community and togetherness associated with the holiday. Seeing a parade full of tradition and culture is a perfect way to spend the day with your family. It provides an excellent bonding experience for everyone involved and it will give you and your children a chance to get in touch with the “Irishness” of American culture.
