District of Columbia State Athletic Association Partners With Special Olympics DC for State Unified Track and Field Championship Washington, D.C. -- The District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) is partnering with Special Olympics DC to hold the first DCSAA Unified Track and Field Championship. The meet will be held as part of the DCSAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday, May 24 at Gallaudet University. “The District is one of the few jurisdictions in the country that doesn’t yet have a unified component and it is something we wanted to include,” DCSAA Executive Director Clark Ray said. “So we reached out to Special Olympics DC and they were happy to participate.” Student-athletes from Eastern, Theodore Roosevelt and H.D. Woodson will compete in the 100and 200-meter races, a 4x100 meter relay race, shot put, long jump and turbo javelin throw. In addition to these individual winners, the DCSAA will crown a Unified Track and Field team champion. “Special Olympics DC is thrilled to have our athletes participate in the DCSAA state championships,” said Nicole J. Preston, President and Chief Executive Officer of Special Olympics District of Columbia. “Having our athletes compete on the same stage as the DC high school varsity athletes fulfills our mission to provide opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities to demonstrate their courage and strengths, and be fully included in the wider community. Sports are a powerful force that can shift the focus from disability to ability, from isolation to involvement.” To learn more about the District of Columbia State Athletic Association visit www.dcsaasports.org.
