Dear Parent or Carer,
6.6.13 Cashless Catering September 2013
As part of our involvement with the Building Schools for the Future project across the City, we will be improving our catering facilities. As such we will be introducing a new system for paying for school meals. From September the school canteen will be operating a biometric ‘cashless’ catering system. Please find attached all the information concerning the biometric system which will be used. This is fully compliant with the Department for Education legal requirements. However, if you would like more information or the chance to discuss this further, please feel free to contact Mr S Walters, Vice Principal or Mrs L Cooper, Assistant Business Director. Our point of sales tills are being replaced with new terminals which have built in readers. When a student wishes to purchase items from the school canteen, they will collect them in the usual way and then proceed to a till. At this point, rather than paying with cash, they will simply place their finger on the reader. The software will recognise the student and automatically deduct the value from their account. Accounts can be topped up on line and more information in regards to setting this up will follow. Alternatively, students can continue to bring money into school using the automated cash ‘revaluation’ terminals located in reception and the school canteen. Students will be fully trained on this machine and the machines will have a member of staff nearby to assist during the first few weeks of implementation. The revaluation units are programmed to accept £20, £10, £5 notes as well as £2, £1, 50p, and will not be able to issue change. The revaluation unit can be used should students wish to check their balance of their account. The new system will also mean that an itemised record of when and what is being purchased. The system also operates ‘real time’ which means accounts will be topped up or deducted through a purchase instantly. Students in receipt of free school meals will have their accounts automatically credited each day with the free school meal allowance. However, any under spend or missed dinner will be identified by the system and will not be added to the next days balance. Students can opt to add additional funds to their account using the revaluation units, which will allow them to purchase additional snacks before school, at break time or during lunch.
The Sixth Form will be able to use the ‘roaming’ facility which means that as part of the consortium they are able to use the school canteen at St Edmund’s or Wolverhampton Girls’ High should they have lessons in that school and likewise their students have the option to use our facilities. Before the end of term it is envisaged that all students for whom we have consent for the use of the biometric recognition system will have an account set up ready for September. At the start of the new academic year students will be trained on how to operate the system and to be able to purchase goods in the canteen. Please complete the attached form if you consent to the school taking and using information from your child’s fingerprint by S.Peter’s Collegiate School as part of an automated biometric recognition system. If you do not wish to provide consent please put this in writing to myself before 28th June 2013 stating that you would like your child to use the alternative option which is a PIN system. A random four digit number will be generated for your child. If you wish to withdraw your consent at any time, this must be done so in writing and sent to the school at the school address. Once your child ceases to use the biometric recognition system, his/her biometric information will be securely deleted by the school. Yours faithfully,
Mr S Walters Vice Principal
