Dear Parents/Guardians: This semester, your student is enrolled in Family & Consumer Science class. Therefore, he/she will be constructing either a drawstring backpack or a “quillow” (quilt that can be folded and stuffed into a pocket which then immolates a pillow) for a sewing project. Your student may choose their own fabric, thread, cording, etc. from any store (Wal-Mart, JoAnn’s or other stores that carries material). Upon completion of the grading process and the project being displayed in the hallway showcase, your student may then take his or her project home. Please select from the following projects: 1) DRAWSTRING BACKPACK: - WHAT YOU WILL NEED: o FABRIC: ½ yard woven cotton or cotton blend (flannel, gingham, chambray, poplin, etc.) Please do not pick fabric that slick or stretchy because it is too difficult to work with. o CORDING: 2 Pieces of any diameter desired and each 58” in length o THREAD: that matches the fabric o OPTIONAL SUPPLIES: Some students may choose to personalize the backpack by adhering a letter or design to the front of the backpack. If so, please consider what color choices you would prefer and provide the fabric and fabric adhesive (like Stitch Witchery) for that added feature. Fabric glue is not always the best option. 2)
QUILLOW (with a pocket) or QUILT (with no pocket): WHAT YOU WILL NEED: o FABRIC: 5 to 6 yards fleece or heavy polyester knit with one fabric design that we will folded in half OR 2 ½ to 3 yards of two different fabric designs pieces because you want to have a quilt that has a different fabric design on each side. Example: One side of the blanket is a K-State fabric design and the other side is a KU fabric design!!! You will want a thicker fabric for the quillow. Consider what fabric you would like to snuggle up with on a cold winter night or a chilly football game!!! o THREAD: that matches the fabric
Following is a checklist for supplies. Please have all supplies at school by: Monday, October 13 _____ Fabric for construction of either the backpack or quillow _____ Thread to match the fabric choice/choices _____ Iron-on Adhesive and Fabric for personalizing the backpack, if desired _____ Two 58” pieces of cording for the backpack The school does provide sewing equipment for you student to use. However, if your students would like to bring his/her own items from home, each student will be assigned a classroom tote for safe storage of sewing project items. PLEASE NOTE: if money is tight in your family, know that the school does have some limited choices of fabric and cording that may be used by your student for the project. If you would like to use these supplies, please email me or send a note with your student communicating your concerns. Please feel free to contact me at school if you have any questions. Thank you!
