Defending Champ Goldey-Beacom Tops 2017 CACC Women's Tennis Preseason Coaches Poll

Aug 14, 2017 NEW HAVEN, Conn. (August 14, 2017) -- Defending champion Goldey-Beacom College was tabbed first with 76 points (4 first-place votes) in the 2017 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis Preseason Coaches Poll, as announced on Monday by Commissioner Dan Mara. The voting was conducted by the league's nine head coaches in the sport. Following G-B in second place was Concordia College (63 pts & 4 1st-place votes) and rounding out the top three was Wilmington University in third place (58 pts). Goldey-Beacom claimed the program's first CACC title in the sport last fall, as the Lightning also advanced to the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament. The Lightning, under the guidance of head coach Joe Kissel, are slated to return several letterwinners off last season's championship squad. Concordia returns to the courts this fall after taking a one-year hiatus. Prior to last season, the Clippers had been one of the dominant programs in not just the CACC, but all Division II by claiming seven-straight conference crowns (2009-15) and advancing to as many NCAA tournaments during that span. Wilmington will be competing in just its second season as a varsity program in 2017, but had a sensational debut in 2016 as the Wildcats reached the CACC tournament and finished the year ranked in the final NCAA Division II East Region rankings. The remainder of the women's tennis preseason poll included Post University (4th, 52 pts), University of the Sciences (5th, 45 pts), Chestnut Hill College (6th, 40 pts, 1 vote for 1st), Jefferson (7th, 36 pts), Holy Family University (8th, 19 pts) and Caldwell University (9th, 15 pts). The regular season begins on Thursday, Aug. 31, with the regular campaign building up to the CACC Championship tournament on Oct. 17, 20-21. The top-six teams from the regular season standings will advance to the tournament with the top-two seeds getting byes into championship weekend at Post University in Waterbury, Conn. The first round will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the sites of the highest seeds. The matchups will feature the No. 6 seed at the No. 3 seed and the No. 5 seed at the No. 4 seed.
