DELAWARE COUNTY ANDES CYNTHIA & CHARLES BONNES 265 Bussey Hollow Road Our garden is on a hillside facing the western Catskills with four ponds descending toward the mountain view. Around the house and large barn, part of a former dairy farm, are several formal garden spaces defined by native stone walls. They include a perennial border, a fountain terrace and a vegetable garden. An allée of Japanese lilacs ascends the hillside and informal plantings edge two of the ponds and a connecting stream.

MEL & PEG'S RUSTIC CABIN COTTAGE GARDEN 733 Crescent Hill Road Perched on the side of a hill deep in the Catskills, our garden takes full advantage of a beautiful borrowed view that is seamlessly integrated throughout the garden setting. Wind your way up a long sinewy driveway and you are greeted by the boisterous ‘garden proper’ which was carved out of the steep slope and is held up

by a massive boulder retaining wall. Multiple entrances beckon you to enter. Slip in through a cedar arbor covered in grapes, or take the stone path through the conifer garden and meander along gravel and mulch paths through a lush array of small trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses that create a whimsical, enchanted garden experience. Step down the rustic stone staircases, or exit through a mass of hydrangeas, to explore the smaller garden rooms including: a large mixed garden in the shape of a footprint with wide mulch paths, a couple of small shade gardens, a labyrinth (recently over-hauled) and a small country vegetable garden. This is a garden that you find yourself immersed in and one you will experience with all of your senses— as you feel an ornamental grass brush your arm, listen to the trickle of the water feature, smell the intoxicating mock orange wafting in the breeze, or relax in an Adirondack chair. The garden is carefully integrated with our living space to create a seamless experience of indoor and outdoor living. A favorite spot to reflect and enjoy is from the wide frontier porch that spans the length of our hand-stripped log cabin. Sitting from this vantage point, the inside and outside come together while you experience a birds-eye view of the garden and the sweeping mountain vistas.

Delaware County Open Day
Despite being a professional landscape designer our own garden was not designed, but instead is a thirteen-year evolution and a labor of love. It is an eclectic, collector’s garden where we experiment with new plants and techniques. The end result being an exuberant space that is simultaneously wild and orderly.

EAST MEREDITH TOTEM FARM GARDEN 581 Rathbun Hill Road, East Meredith On four acres of sloping land, the garden at Totem Farm has expanded outward from the old farm house and ice house, towards the fields of wildflowers that surround the place on three sides. A big leaf room, a moon garden, a lilac walk, a very old apple orchard, a recently planted plum orchard, a pond walk, and some living willow tunnels for the chickens, are defined by fences, stone walls, and hedges and connected by paths and stone stairs.

JEFFERSON
QUAKER HILL FARM—ELISABETH SEARLES & RICHARD FRIEDBERG 2121 Quaker Hill Road We bought this hilltop farm in the Western Catskills many years ago but did not really start to develop the garden until we moved up from New York City about twenty years ago. Since then we have shaped a landscape of broad lawns, trees, perennial borders, stonewalls, and three ponds in an effort to highlight the lovely mountain view but also to create a sense of comfort and enclosure. The area that was the old farm rock “dump” is now a rock garden; an existing pond was enlarged for livestock and for better views from the house; a living willow gazebo provides shelter and a lovely vista of the pond and distant mountains; and a swimming pond feeds a series of naturally landscaped smaller ponds across the road from the house. Richard’s large sculptures are displayed on the property.

stream bed that runs between the house and the horse barn, and reaches toward a large rock in the woods surrounded by ferns. The beds are dense and deep, the plants encouraged to retain some of their wildness. The stone work is both old and ongoing: the hand-hewn flagstones of the terrace, the walls circling the house and running along the pastures where the horses graze, the stone bridge leading to a milk house, the large stone path snaking through a swampy meadow. Antique trucks and farm equipment are settled about. The house, barns, and front porch are open to everyone as they are considered part of the garden.
