SMARTS • A real-time, operational environmental information system • Client-Server architecture – Server-side computations • Provides a suite of observed and derived meteorological, climatological, and hydrological products: – air temperature, wind vector and gust, atmospheric humidity and pressure, solar radiation, soil moisture – precipitation – hourly, 12- and 24-hour total, storm-total – from both WSR-88D-derived, gage-measured, and composite – estimates of snow cover, soil moisture content, potential and actual evapotranspiration, apparent temperature, etc.

• All products provided at approximately a 0.02° lat/lon grid • Output available in a GIS-compatible format for integration with existing applications • Animation and retrieval capabilities

Twenty-four hour precipitation total for central Delmarva on August 11, 2001 at 7PM EDT. This corresponds to the time that a dam at Hearn’s Pond near Seaford failed due to excessive rainfall. Rainfall estimates in some locations exceeded 14 inches, although the official gage at Georgetown airport measured less than 5 inches. Note the high spatial variability in rainfall.
