Introduction Citrix Branch Repeater™, available as a physical or virtual appliance, is a WAN optimization solution that provides a high definition desktop and application experience to branch and mobile users while dramatically reducing WAN bandwidth costs and simplifying branch infrastructure. Branch Repeater accelerates desktop and application delivery, decreases WAN bandwidth consumption, and enables server consolidation. The Branch Repeater product family addresses the full range of WAN optimization scenarios and delivers unparalleled application acceleration benefits, especially for Citrix XenDesktop™ and Citrix XenApp™. Unlike traditional WAN optimization solutions, only Branch Repeater incorporates HDX™ technologies to optimize virtual desktop delivery. Branch Repeater provides local caching and de-duplication across multiple XenDesktop or XenApp (ICA) user sessions and local staging of XenApp streamed applications. Branch Repeater also delivers adaptive orchestration capabilities for XenDesktop and XenApp, sensing real-time network and traffic conditions, and dynamically optimizing delivery to branch offices. Together these capabilities deliver breakthrough ICA acceleration and allow IT to support up to 2X more users in each branch office without upgrading WAN bandwidth. To enable greater consolidation within the branch, Branch Repeater is available as a virtual appliance that runs on existing servers and an integrated branch appliance that delivers essential infrastructure services such as file, print, authentication, DHCP and DNS, all provided by Microsoft® Windows Server®. Along with optimizations for XenDesktop and XenApp, Branch Repeater also provides application acceleration benefits for other centralized applications delivered to the branch office including Windows file sharing, Exchange e-mail and enterprise web applications like Microsoft SharePoint. Only Branch Repeater optimizes the delivery of hosted (ICA), streamed and traditional client-server applications, thereby helping customers accelerate their IT consolidation initiatives while ensuring a high-performance experience in the branch office. Branch Repeater VPX is a virtualized Branch Repeater Appliance that runs as a Xen virtual machine. With a few exceptions, it has the same features as the Repeater Appliance. Branch Repeater VPX allows Branch Repeater acceleration to be deployed on a variety of platforms, and can be combined with other virtual machines running on the same server. This guide will walk through the deployment of the Branch Repeater Virtual Machine on Citrix XenServer.

XenServer Install Citrix XenServer on the server that will run the Branch Repeater VPX. Install Citrix XenCenter on a PC to manage the XenServer and BR VPX. As in this proof of concept, the XenServer and BR VPX can be managed from across the WAN.
BR VPX Install the BR VPX on XenServer. From XenCenter, navigate to File -> Import VM.
From the Citrix XenServer console: File Import Exported VM.

Select Storage Repository
Attach Virtual Network Interfaces: Attach virtual network interfaces “interface 0” and “interface 1” to the two virtual adapters called “Networks 0” and “Network 1” respectively. Note: Do not assign both virtual adapters to the same Network. At least one of these needs to correspond to a physical Ethernet port. If virtual network “Interface 2” exists (on systems with three or more adapters), this can be assigned as well and used as a management interface.
Don’t start VM: Uncheck the box “Start VM after import”. Some additional configuration is required and requires that the VM be halted before continuing. Select Finish. This will take some time. Check the Logs tab of the XenServer.
Storage: Select the Branch Repeater VPX, then select Storage. Increase storage to 100Gb. Start the VM.

License: Download and install a license.
Bandwidth Settings: Before you connect the Branch Repeater “Network 1” interface to the WAN, be sure the bandwidth settings match the line speed of the WAN. Note: If you are having connectivity issues on the “Network 0” and/or “Network 1” interfaces, check speed and duplex settings on the NIC’s.
