JAMES POSEY TWO-TIME NBA WORLD CHAMPION James Posey signed with the Boston Celtics in August of 2007, joining other heralded newcomers Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. Posey and the Celtics went on to a 66-16 regular season record, winning an Eastern Conference Atlantic Division Championship. The Celtics advanced to the NBA Finals by defeating the Atlanta Hawks (4-3), Cleveland Cavaliers (4-3) and the Detroit Pistons (4-2). With the help of several clutch shots by Posey in game six of the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Celtics went on to win their 17th NBA World Championship. Players like David West not only make the league but stick around for long and successful careers. Brian Grant (right) played 13 NBA seasons, while Aaron Williams (left) logged 14 NBA seasons. Tyrone Hill played 14 seasons and Derek Strong played 10 seasons in the NBA. The list goes on and on.

PROGRAM PRESTIGE – 17. XAVIER This past summer, ESPN.com decided to evaluate the hundreds of Division I men’s college basketball teams. The study weighed the thousands of regular-season and postseason wins and losses, the NBA draft picks, the All-Americans and the national titles to come up with a numerical point system to provide unbiased rankings of every college hoops program’s success since the start of the 1984-85 season. ESPN assigned point values for certain successes (win a national title, earn 25 points) and failures (get your program banned from the NCAA tournament, lose three points). Based on this point system all seasons were evaluated and calculated and ESPN released the Top 300 programs of the past 24 seasons.
MEN’S BASKETBALL PROGRAM RANKED AMONG THE NATION’S ELITE XAVIER EARNS TOP 10 RANKING AGAIN FROM BASKETBALL TIMES The Xavier University men’s basketball program is once again ranked among the “Top 10” programs in the United States, according to the Basketball Times rankings. In fact, the study, which BT has done every five years since 1997, shows that XU is one of only four men’s basketball programs that have ranked in the “Top 10” in 1997, 2002 and 2007. The other three programs are Duke, North Carolina and Kansas.

NATIONAL EXPOSURE A REACH ONLY FEW PROGRAMS CAN MATCH Xavier has become a regular in the major national polls, including a 15th in the 2009 Final USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll and 20th in the final 2009 Associated Press Poll. The year before, in 2008, XU recorded a school-record eighth in the 2008 Final USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll and a school-record 12th in the final Associated Press Poll in 2008 and 2003. The 2003 season was the senior year for David West, who was the 2003 National Player of the Year for the Associated Press, the United States Basketball Writers Association and Basketball Times magazine while also securing a league-record third straight Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year award.

STATEMENT WINS NATIONAL LEVEL NON-CONFERENCE WINS Xavier has played and beaten a long list of traditional powers from all of the major conferences in recent years. That’s one of the main reasons Xavier has maintained a lofty RPI rating and earned strong seeds in the NCAA Tournament, including a number three seed in 2008 and a number four seed in 2009.

A NATIONAL SCHEDULE ONCE AGAIN, XAVIER HAS ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S TOUGHEST SCHEDULES Xavier will test itself on the road against many of the nation’s best, including at Florida, at Wake Forest, at Butler and at Kansas State. Cincinnati and defending SEC Champion LSU visit Cintas Center. Once again XU also plays in one of the elite neutral site events, the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla., with a first round game against Marquette and later potential games against the likes of Michigan, Creighton, Alabama, Baylor or Florida State. ESPN’s Dick Vitale put it simply. “It’s a phenomenal schedule.”
29
THE FIRST ANNUAL SKIP PROSSER CL ASSIC XAVIER – WAKE FOREST Wake Forest University and Xavier University will start a 10-year basketball series on January 3, 2010, which will be known as the Skip Prosser Classic. Prosser was at Xavier University for 15 years from 1985-2001, including as the Xavier head coach from 1994-2001, and at Wake Forest as head coach from 2001 until his death in 2007. Xavier head coach Chris Mack played for Prosser at Xavier and was on Prosser staffs at Xavier and Wake Forest. XU associate head coach Pat Kelsey played for Prosser as well and was on Prosser’s final staff at Wake.
30
THE ELITE EXEMPT EVENTS BEST SITES AND OPPONENTS Xavier has become a successful regular at some of the best annual exempt events. Xavier won the 2008 Puerto Rico Tip-Off last season with wins over Missouri, Virginia Tech and Memphis. XU won the 2007 Chicago Challenge with a win over a top 10 Indiana team in the title tilt. XU defeated VCU and Villanova and finished runner-up to Alabama at the 2006 U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. The year before that it was a blowout win over Purdue in the 2005 Wooden Tradition at Conseco Fieldhouse, home of the Indiana Pacers. Do you see the trend? Once again this season XU plays in one of the elite neutral site events, the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla., with a first round game against Marquette and possible later games against the likes of Michigan, Creighton, Alabama, Baylor or Florida State. XU is scheduled to go back to the Virgin Islands event next season.

“I think Chris Mack will be a diaper dandy success as a college coach. Xavier looks like they’re in great hands. Chris is the ideal guy for Xavier, a former team captain who brings great leadership skills. He has a wealth of experience working with some great coaches at Xavier and at Wake Forest.” DICK VITALE, ESPN/ABC ANALYST
“Chris Mack is fully prepared to be an outstanding head coach. Chris is smart, hard working and has a great understanding of the game and those that play it. Above all, he’s intensely loyal to Xavier. Chris Mack is a Xavier man through and through, and I believe he’ll do a great job.” JAY BILAS, ESPN BASKETBALL ANALYST
CHRIS MACK A COMPETITOR AND A WINNER Head Coach Chris Mack, a two-time team captain as a player at Xavier, spent the past five seasons as an assistant on Sean Miller’s staff here at Xavier. Prior to that he was on the staff of the late Skip Prosser both at Xavier and at Wake Forest. During his 10 years on the staffs at Xavier and Wake, Mack coached on nine teams that made postseason play, including eight teams that made the NCAA Tournament field.

THE CINTAS CENTER COLLEGE BASKETBALL’S TOP ON-CAMPUS ARENA It’s a tough ticket. Xavier has seen way more than one million fans pass through its gates since Cintas Center opened. The support they’ve brought has helped Xavier compile a 120-17 (.876) record in nine seasons at Cintas Center, including 14-1 last season. Xavier has now sold out 83 home games since moving to Cintas Center, including 11 this past season. XU has averaged 10,019 fans for its 122 games played in nine seasons at the 10,250-seat Cintas Center, which opened for the 2000-01 season.
34
NBA-LEVEL ENVIRONMENT UNMATCHED ENERGY ON GAMEDAYS Welcome to big-time basketball. It’s an NBA-level environment located in the middle of a college campus. On game night, anyone in attendance feels lucky to be a part of it. “The atmosphere is electric, baby.” That was Dick Vitale’s take on Cintas Center from his broadcast spot at center court. The excitement spreads throughout the 22 jam-packed luxury boxes and endless rows of sold out premium seats. It’s the place to be on game night. It’s NBA-style entertainment in college basketball’s best on-campus arena. Xavier University’s Cintas Center was selected as the third-toughest among the “Toughest Places to Play” in college basketball, according to an EA SPORTS on-line poll.
35
THE CINTAS CENTER THE ROBERT KOHLHEPP PRACTICE GYM The Kohlhepp Family practice gym in Cintas Center rivals and, in many cases, exceeds the practice facilities in NBA arenas around the country. It is unrivalled at the collegiate level. A recent addition to the practice facility is the Ignition Cardio Room. Equipped with four state-of-the-art Woodway Treadmills, this room is a perfect example of Xavier’s continued commitment to individual development.

Harden was the strongest guard, putting up 17 bench reps, while Luke Harangody took the top spot with 23 followed by Blake Griffin (22), and Xavier’s Derrick Brown (20). It isn’t surprising to see Brown near the top of this list, as Xavier players always seem to outperform their peers when it comes to the bench –a testament to their strength and conditioning program. Brown posed some other very impressive totals, tying Jordan Hill with a max vertical reach of 11’11” and running an excellent time (3.13) in the ¾ court sprint for a forward.

THE FUTURE OF XAVIER “TO SEE GREAT WONDERS” Xavier University is in the building process of the most sweeping project in Xavier’s 178-year history. The first phase of the project is the 115-million dollar James E. Hoff, S.J., Academic Quadrangle. The Hoff Quadrangle is the centerpiece of a transformation on the Xavier campus to help meet the learning needs of 21st century students. As the heart of the Hoff Academic Quad, the Conaton Learning Commons will provide students with the facilities, technologies and services to help them master skills and gain a competitive advantage in their disciplines. The campus transformation will eventually include an ascending plaza connecting the existing Academic Mall with the

new Quad. Progress is going great on construction of the new, state-of-the-art Williams College of Business to be located at the corner of Dana Avenue and Ledgewood Drive. The transformation continues farther east with the 32-acre development of what is now called East Campus. Ideas for the future of the East Campus area include a combination of student and market-rate housing, stores, restaurants, commercial office space, a boutique hotel, fitness center, student health center and new Xavier bookstore.
