American Bear

Finished Size: Approximately 9½" tall (seated)

MATERIALS Worsted Weight Yarn, approximately: Brown - 7 ounces, (200 grams, 440 yards) Black - small amount Crochet hook, size H (5.00 mm) or size needed for gauge Polyester stuffing Yarn needle ½" Flat two-holed buttons - 4 Soft sculpture needle 4" x 5" American flag Jute - small amount Note: Entire Bear is worked holding two strands of yarn together.

Note: Loop a short piece of yarn around any stitch to mark last row as right side. Row 2: Ch 1, turn; work beginning decrease, sc in next sc, decrease: 3 sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn; work beginning double decrease: one sc. Edging: Ch 1, do not turn; sc evenly around entire Ear; join with slip st to first sc, finish off.

Using photo as a guide for placement, sew Ears to Head.

BODY

With Brown, ch 20 loosely; being careful not to twist ch, join with slip st to form a ring. Rnd 1 (Right side): Ch 1, sc in each ch around; do not join, place marker: 20 sc.

GAUGE: 7 sc and 7 rows = 2"

Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 3: (Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 24 sc.

HEAD

Rnd 1 (Right side): With Brown, ch 2, 6 sc in second ch from hook; do not join, place marker (see Markers, page 4). Rnd 2: (2 Sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in next sc) twice: 10 sc. Rnd 3: Sc in each sc around.

Rnds 4 and 5: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 6: (Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 28 sc. Rnds 7 and 8: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 9: (Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 32 sc.

Rnd 4: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 15 sc.

Rnds 10-12: Sc in each sc around.

Thread yarn needle with yarn end and weave through stitches on Rnd 19; gather tightly and secure end.

Rnd 15: (Sc in next sc, decrease) around: 12 sc.

Using photo as a guide for placement, stuff Body firmly and sew Head to open end of Body.

Rnd 14: (Sc in next 2 sc, decrease) around: 18 sc. Stuff Head firmly.

ARM (Make 2) Rnd 1 (Right side): With Brown, ch 2, 6 sc in second ch from hook; do not join, place marker.

Rnd 16: Decrease around; slip st in next sc, finish off leaving a long end for sewing. Thread yarn needle with yarn end and weave through stitches on Rnd 16; gather tightly and secure end.

Rnd 2: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 9 sc.

EAR (Make 2)

Rnds 3-5: Sc in each sc around.

Row 1 (Right side): Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across: 5 sc.

Rnd 7: 2 Sc in each sc around: 12 sc.

With Brown and leaving a long end for sewing, ch 6 loosely.

Rnd 6: (Sc in next sc, decrease) around: 6 sc. Rnds 8-11: Sc in each sc around.

FINISHING

Using photo as a guide for placement: With Black, work satin stitch for eyes and nose (Fig. 4, page 4) and straight stitch for mouth (Fig. 5, page 4).

Stuff Arm firmly. Thread yarn needle with yarn end and weave through stitches on Rnd 17; gather tightly and secure end.

LEG (Make 2)

With Brown, ch 4 loosely. Rnd 1 (Right side): 3 Sc in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch, sc in next free loop of beginning ch (Fig. 2, page 4); do not join, place marker: 8 sc. Rnd 2: Sc in next sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc: 12 sc.

Rnd 3: Working in Back Loops Only (Fig. 3, page 4), sc in next 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each sc around: 14 sc.

Thread soft sculpture needle with a 30" length of yarn. Insert needle through Arm (Fig. 1) approximately ½" from top (at 1), then through first hole of button and back through second hole of button (at 2) and through Arm again (at 1). Insert needle completely through Body ½" down from neck and out second side (at 3), through second Arm approximately ½" from top and through first hole of second button, and back through second hole of button (at 4). Insert needle back through second Arm (at 3) and back through Body (at 5).

Pull both ends of yarn so that Arms fit tightly against the Body but are still able to move freely at sides. Knot the strands tightly, weave the ends under several stitches, and cut ends close to work.

Rnd 21: (Sc in next 3 sc, decrease) around: 16 sc.

Attach Legs in the same manner, positioning them about 1½" above the bottom of the Body.

Stuff Leg firmly.

Dye flag with coffee, then accordion fold. Let dry completely. Tie jute around center of flag. Centering flag in front of Bear, place around neck and tie ends of jute in a bow at back.

Rnd 22: Sc in next sc, (decrease, sc in next sc) around; slip st in next sc, finish off leaving a long end for sewing. Thread yarn needle with yarn end and weave through stitches on Rnd 22; gather tightly and secure end.

When instructed to work in free loops of a chain, work in loop indicated by arrow (Fig. 2).

GAUGE

Correct gauge is essential for proper size. Hook size given in instructions is merely a guide and should never be used without first making a sample swatch in the stitch, yarn, and hook specified. Then measure it, counting your stitches and rows carefully. If your swatch is smaller than specified, try again with a larger size hook; if larger, try again with a smaller size. Keep trying until you find the size that will give you the specified gauge. DO NOT HESITATE TO CHANGE HOOK SIZE TO OBTAIN CORRECT GAUGE.

MARKERS

Markers are used to help distinguish the beginning of each round being worked. Place a 2" scrap piece of yarn before the first stitch of each round, moving marker after each round is complete.

SATIN STITCH

Satin Stitch is series of straight stitches worked side by side, touching but not overlapping. Come up at odd numbers and go down at even numbers (Fig. 4).

BEGINNING DECREASE Pull up a loop in first 2 sts, YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook (counts as one sc).

STRAIGHT STITCH

Straight Stitch is just what the name implies, a single, straight stitch. Come up at 1 and go down at 2 (Fig. 5).
